Closer to home the priority of preaching slides in our churches amidst a culture sedated by information overload and anti-intellectualism. Moreover, missiologists report that where the church is exploding in African, Latin American and Asian continents, new converts are regularly enfolded into churches that are led by inadequately trained bi-vocational pastors. Significant kingdom gains are frequently undermined by weak theology in the pulpit and spurious teaching. The result is a weakened church. Good preaching is critical to the health and wellbeing of our churches. More specifically, it is expository preaching that best equips and sustains healthy, reproducing congregations. This project is my attempt to address this reality. The '40 days of purpose' is a church-based campaign that was created at the Saddleback Community Church in Lake Forest, California, where Rick Warren is the senior pastor, and is designed to address five elements of church health: evangelism, worship, fellowship, discipleship and service.  This project will review Saddleback's understanding of these areas of church health as well as the way they are presented in the '40 days of purpose' and present an alternative understanding and presentation, as well as the addition of prayer as a key element of church health. As specifically stated in the title, this project contends for the centrality of expository preaching and as such, it presents both the philosophical foundation and the homiletical process of expository preaching. Specific illustrations are given on how to preach expository sermons from New Testament Epistles and Old Testament narrative, with suggestions on how to make exposition relevant to congregations of the twenty-first century. By examining the biographies, times, congregations, literature, message and sermon methods of these five preachers whose ministries span a 70-year period, we may be able to extract techniques that can be useful for contemporary preachers to be more relevant communicators of the Word of God.  The project begins with biblical foundations for preaching and moves to the specific times in which these five preachers spoke to their congregations, communities and society. The study focused on the Gospel of John and the communication of five doctrinally specific messages, which were preached to a congregation of military men and women, Department of Defense workers, retirees, and their families. In this climate, how does a military chaplain do expository doctrinal preaching?  This writer will attempt to show that doctrinal preaching is best done in an expository manner through diligent study, prayer, and a reliance on the Holy Spirit.  Relevance is accomplished when the particulars of a given congregation are addressed.  Chapter one addresses the problem of preaching that is mostly eisegetical and not exegetical.  Chapter two establishes the biblical, sociological, and theological basis for doctrinal preaching with a contemporary congregation in mind.  Chapter three reveals the methodology to address the stated problem, that of a preaching series on Bible doctrine. The stated primary goal is transformation, seeking the salvation of sinners and sanctification of saints.  Progress of the project is also charted. Chapter four concludes with an evaluation gleaned from 24 surveys that were completed at the conclusion of the 14-week preaching series. The project provides a biblical justification for this connection, establishes a set of hermeneutical values for building God-centered sermons, and describes a model for producing messages based on those values.  The project includes a summary of two surveys of preachers, and the author's interview with Piper. This research showed that when people learn how to hear a sermon, they comprehend it differently.  The project testing tools were developed as quantitative measures of a control group's ability to hear and understand a sermon.  After measurement data were collected, they were used to determine project effectiveness.  After tools were developed, measurement models were used to test group learning in an actual setting.
