The author attempts to point out that there is a difference. Preachers are not mere communicators, but heralds of God's 'Good News.' This is a project aimed to teach expository sermons.    Chapter two reflects on the theology of preaching based on a high view of Scripture. Preachers are called and sent by God to proclaim a message gleaned from God's Word. How else would one dare to utter the words, 'Thus saith the Lord!'?    Chapter three consists of a literature review to emphasize the excellence of expository preaching. The principles of the why, what, when, where, who and how of preparing and preaching expository sermons are explained.    Chapter four outlines the teaching sessions and lesson plans based on Haddon Robinson's book Biblical preaching. Teaching session and plans are entirely flexible as long as Robinson's twelve stages are utilized. To test this thesis, a series of twelve biblical sermons on discipleship was preached at Crowfield Baptist Church, Goose Creek, South Carolina. A focus group of 16 persons was administered a pretest and posttest to determine the effectiveness of the preaching series in increasing listeners' knowledge of biblical teachings on discipleship, and upon their personal state of discipleship. Ch.3 examines the five genres of the Old Testament. Specific insights, sub-types, and characteristics of each of the genres are addressed. This chapter also includes general principles for understanding each of the five Old Testament genres and suggestions for preaching these genres. Ch. 4 presents the methodology used in the expository sermon series and teaching sessions. It includes the facets of the implementation of the project from beginning to completion. The weekly topics for study along with the rationale for each is given as well as classroom methodology.  Chapter 5 is an evaluation of the project. A Student Manual and a Teaching Supplement are provided to accomplish that task.  Because Biblical Preaching is conceptual by nature, the principles can be difficult to remember and harder yet to apply for the typical minister. This thesis attempts to make those concepts easier for the student to remember and apply. It also provides teaching strategies and goals for the teacher. The thesis uses an indicative approach to teaching rather than a deductive approach. It also uses The Systematic Design of Instruction, by Walter Dick and Lou Carey, for teaching to offer exact goals and measurable objectives. A startling number folks, after hearing hundreds of biblical sermons, still think they are saved by 'being good people.' Many Christians who sing 'Amazing Grace' with gusto, live functionally 'graceless' lives. Few people think grace when they hear the word church. This project aims to help preachers and Bible teachers who long to communicate grace in a way that transforms grace novices into a community of grace connoisseurs. This thesis suggest pastors begin with expository preaching. By basing each message on the central idea in each biblical text, a pastor fastens himself and his congregation to the message of grace. Next it suggests pastors make shalom, an Old Testament word describing the 'kingdom of God,' the target of every sermon. This single, unifying target provides the cohesive framework that forms years of sermons into one grace-full whole. The thesis then encourages pastors to understand their congregation's worldview, a way of answering what and how people think. A pastor who identifies and understands what his congregation believes about the alternatives to grace promoted in culture, can make his message clearer. Likewise, when a pastor understands how his congregation receives information he can communicate his message in a method clearest to their pattern of hearing. American culture has become so image-saturated that its main language is the language of images. In such a world, the rich variety of biblical images provides the optimal introduction and understanding of grace. Often preachers focus their sermons on changing a specific behavior of their audience. This thesis suggests that pastors can best build a culture of grace by aiming to change a congregation's worldview. Finally, five professional peers evaluated the three project sermons along with three sermons randomly selected from the project director's prior year of preaching.
