Most preachers desire to be successful in their pulpit ministry yet many question whether or not it is. The purpose of this thesis is to define successful preaching and list the results a preacher can realistically expect through the faithful preaching of God's Word. The basis of this thesis is the nature and authority of the Word of God. The author will posit that the Bible, the sixty-six books of the Christian canon, is the authoritative Word of God and, therefore, is powerfully effective to bring about change and growth in the lives of the listeners. The effective power of God's Word is, however, affected by three variables: the sovereignty of God, listener response, and the message preached. While the preacher cannot control either the sovereignty of God nor listener response, he is able to remove the obstacles to the faithful and effective preaching of God's Word. This thesis begins by laying the theological foundation for building a case for success in preaching: the nature and authority of both God's Word written and God's Word preached. Next, the vast field of homiletical literature will be explored in order to define the criteria that can be used to the purpose and process of a preaching groups that was formed to encourage successful preaching. Right and wrong have largely been reduced to personal opinions even in those who regularly attend church. One pastor documented through national surveys, polls, studies, and articles how right and wrong in contemporary culture have become divorced from the Ten Commandments. Conducting research at a congregational level and among other community Christian churches, resulted in the finding that the Ten Commandments are seen as God's rules for right and wrong but not in a personal sense for one's daily life as a Christian. Many regular church goers are operating from the conviction - I know it is wrong according to God, but God forgives me in Christ, so I'll do it anyway! The pastor undertook a seven Sunday Bible study and preaching series focusing on the Ten Commandments using the lessons of the day. During the seven-week series the average of people in church increased 6% over the previous year average. After discussing the biblical and theological mandates for apologetics as well as the development of the current postmodern worldview, a case is made that the church needs to respond with a well-reasoned worldview/philosophical argument for the authority and inspiration of the Bible.     A description of the project is given, describing the process from promotion to evaluation. The primary content of the project was a sermons series which was supplemented by an apologetics class. This work contains a brief description of the sermons and a synopsis of the major apologetic arguments of each.     The final chapter provides a description of the empirical data derived from the evaluation of a focus group, and the conclusions were clear. Chapter 1 sets the context for the project, identifying the need that justifies such a strategy. Chapter 2 examines the historical, biblical, and theological implications of expository preaching and evangelism. The project methodology is examined alongside those principles found and then implemented accordingly. Chapter 3 continues to look at expository preaching and evangelism, but does so from a sociological and psychological viewpoint. The goal is to identify challenges facing the church so that an appropriate plan may be devised to overcome them. Chapter 4 details the process and method of the project. A series of expository sermons was presented while an ongoing evangelism training strategy was implemented. Chapter 1 outlines the purpose, goals, context, rationale, and research methodology for the project. Chapter 2 provides the theological and exegetical basis for using the Book of Ecclesiastes as pedagogy. Salient issues related to the purpose and meaning of Ecclesiastes are discussed with special attention directed to the project's curriculum, Ecclesiastes 2:1-11. A justification for Solomonic authorship is presented as well. Chapter 3 explores expository preaching in the context of postmodernism. This chapter defines 'postmodernism' and traces the development of hermeneutics as the foundation of postmodern thought. It also examines the rationale for employing expository preaching as both antithesis and antidote for postmodernity. Chapters 4 and 5 present the specific elements of the ministry project. Organization of test groups is described and pre-test/post-test questionnaire methodology is detailed.
