Six sermons were preached during public worship at Zion-Memorial United Church, Carleton Place, Ontario. Fourteen participants from the congregation responded to a questionnaire.  The qualitative research method 'content analysis' was used to examine data reported by the hearers in sixty-one answers to the questionnaire.  These data tell how the hearers reacted to the sermons, and what they had to say about the message and the 'sender' of the message. Conversion of the purse is most difficult for most mainline Protestants in the 1990s. This project preaches a series of seven sermons from Luke/Acts to elicit 'conversion of the purse.' The texts are Lk 4:16-30, Lk 19:1-10, Lk 11:1-4, Lk 12:13-21, Acts 4:32-5:11, Acts 19:23-41 and Lk 6:20-26, which offer a variety of literary form and content. The sermons ask: Does God side with the poor? Can a rich person be saved? When is enough enough? Does life consist in the abundance of one's possessions? Is the choice between giving and dying? Is the way we make our money as important to stewardship as the way we spend our money? Are the poor really blessed? Exegesis draws from Luke Timothy Johnson, theology from Robert Farrar Capon, Richard J. Caccioppo in a sermon series on 1 Corinthians. Expository preaching must be persuasive and life-changing, grounded on synthetic, holistic interpretation. The extended value of a series based on a biblical book and that more enduring effect are likely to occur through a cognitive process called 'elaboration.' Since the project was carried out in the uncontrolled environment of a local church, results were tentative and descriptive rather than definitive or predictive.  Three communication factors emerged as significant: trustworthiness, clarity of exposition, and receptor-experience-based terminology. The author sought respondents from a sample of greatly growing, a sample of moderately growing, and a sample of plateaued or declining Church of God congregations.  Sermons in greatly growing churches were significantly stronger in relevance/practicality, vision, a basis in God's Word, and focus of thought compared with sermons in moderately growing churches. A series of sermons was developed with the input from the project associates to help the Korean congregation understand the Christian message in the context of Korean shamanistic culture and to equip them as ministers for God and to others. The people who will find this project most beneficial will be young men in ministry who have not been able to attend a Christian college or seminary, men who are called to preach later in life, bi-vocational pastors, and laymen who have opportunity to preach occasionally.  A second group of people who will benefit is those to whom these men minister on a regular basis.  The project was accomplished by contracting with a group of about ten interested men to meet once a week over a period of ten weeks for two-hour sessions. The researcher preached a series of thirteen sermons to a church in Toronto, Canada. The same sermon was preached to two congregations each Sunday.  In one of the services the theme was illustrated by 35mm slides; in the alternate service, the same illustration was preached without visual support.
