The discipleship in this project is a culmination of research in the Bible, a survey of historical and contemporary literature, the surveying of two para-church collegiate ministries and two local churches, along with the feedback of a focus group. Discipleship is found to be personal dedication to a lifelong, intergenerational journey with a local church.  The preaching ministry is gifted by Jesus to accomplish three main goals: 1) works of service, 2) unity in the faith, and 3) knowledge of the Son of God (Eph 4:11-13). The twenty-first century ushered in yet another subset of challenges facing biblical preaching and preachers. This project examines the mindsets of modernity and postmodernity alike, with a view toward preachers understanding and engaging the habits of modernity and skepticism of postmodernity through the lens of the gospel of God and its crown jewel, the cross of Jesus Christ. Whereas postmodernity asserts that truth is what one makes it and the reader imports meaning into the text rather than derives meaning from the biblical text, preachers must allow the biblical text to say what God intends to say rather than substantiate postmodern indictments toward scripture and its interpreters. A theological and hermeneutical case is made for the use of a conversational homiletic and the tested in a congregational setting. Included are sermons based on 'texts' from the arts placed in conversation with biblical texts preached in an urban congregation. Parishioners verified the validity of the project thesis through group and individual discussion and a congregational survey. A long-term preaching plan, if properly understood and implemented, could benefit a pastor greatly.  This long-term preaching plan has been developed and introduced for use at the Church of the Open Bible in Parkesburg, Pennsylvania.  Twenty-seven sermons were crafted using a long-term sermon process that was learned and developed under the tutelage of John Reed at Dallas Theological Seminary.  A descriptive survey assists in the evaluation process.  The same survey was handed out in a pre-test and post-test format to measure the spiritual growth of the congregation in the following areas: comprehension -- knowledge; convictions -- biblical beliefs, attitudes, and values; and conduct -- behavior. The long-term planning process helps the pastor in sermon preparation and assists in the spiritual formation of the local church.
