In both Canada and the United States of America, congregations have engaged the kingdom in a myriad of ways through five broad primary areas of ministry: faith formation, global mission, gospel presentation and worship, mercy and justice, and servant leadership. Along the road of this long history of ministry, a need was recognized to provide a denominational program to face an increasing number of problems arising between some pastors and their congregations. Here a psychotherapist uses the narrative of her treatment of the grown daughter of a narcissistic mother to illuminate, not just the profound lifelong injuries to such a daughter, but also what the arc of psychospiritual healing can look like for her.As a psychotherapist and ordained minister, I’m a hearer and honorer of stories.  Stories are at the core of what it means to be human; to what it means to be alive; to becoming more and more able to do the hard work of relationship. Ultimately, stories are crucial and foundational to the sacred work of healing and of redemption. In the words of Dr. Dan Allender, “...there is the necessity and blessing of telling our story to others. To the degree that we know God and then join him in writing our story, we are honored to join others in the calling of storytelling. The author prioritizes marriage counseling in her work as a military Chaplain, more so than she did while pastoring in the local church. This study examines contributing factors within military culture that lead to dissolution of marriages and examines possible remedies to the problem. The project proposes a role for the Chaplain as a care leader to help military service members build healthier marriages. Wesley  White"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral theology","Pastoral counseling","Family counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis question of this project is, “Is differentiation of self a helpful concept for Christian ministry?” The project begins with a careful explanation of what differentiation of self means in the context of Bowen Family Systems Theory (BFST), explaining that it primarily relates to distinguishing the emotional from the intellectual process and developing the ability to act deliberately in terms of reason and principle as well as feeling.The project examines various passages of Scripture to seek a parallel between the teaching of Scripture and the understanding of differentiation of self in BFST. This investigation demonstrates that while the words are not present, the concept is extremely important in Scripture. The project then considers parallels to differentiation of self in church history, particularly noting the parallels with a variety of explanations of virtue ethics. The project then provides a summary of modern scholarship on this issue. It concludes that writers on these topics find the concept of differentiation of self to be helpful to ministry while also critiquing the secular concept of differentiation of self in BFST as needing the purpose of God’s kingdom and the grace of God for implementation.Finally, a model for ministry is developed in an outline and explanation of a seminar.
