The author chose the season of Lent to preach a series of sermons in his congregation on the subject of fasting. Part of the analysis is based on a personal journal kept by the author over a period of 35 weeks.  Other analysis is based upon data collected from 48 randomly chosen students at Bible Teachers Institute in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  They were asked to complete a two-part survey on their practice and perception of fasting. The project prepares and delivers sermon series on fasting as spiritual discipline, encouraging church members to respond. Contemporary fasting practices in the Orthodox church are discussed in terms of the social history of Orthodox jurisdictions in the United States and the effects of a number of social factors on pastoral issues in Orthodox spirituality.  The paper also reports an empirical study of the effects of fasting combined with prayer or prayer alone on subjects who were either regular fasters or who did not normally fast. Non-fasters following a regimen of fasting and prayer reported improvements in their general spiritual lives. Selected persons will attend a 90-minute session each week for ten weeks in which they will receive information on world hunger, education on the use of dietary exchange lists for diet control, and group support for personal needs and concerns.  They will be tested before and after the project for evidence of learning.  They will submit weekly progress reports on diet control.  They will experience a 24-hour fast.  They will be given recipes and other information to facilitate low-calorie, vegetarian and other diet programs.  Twelve persons participated in this project.  Generally, all persons lost weight or achieved their dietary goals. Most gained valuable insight into world hunger issues.  All persons received excellent group support. From the time the first Christian church was established in Thailand to the present day, there has been little growth.  Most churches in Thailand remain weak and ineffective.  Some North American churches and the South Korean churches of the second half of the twentieth century have both prayed and fasted for their countries as a regular practice, resulting in an increased number of believers.  The project manager felt an urgency to train the churches in Thailand to use the power available by focusing prayer through
