Research into why people do or do not forgive was made through personal interviews, questionnaires and literature search. The family unit as a system was reviewed and three therapeutic counseling methods designed to bring forth forgiveness were examined. Data revealed realistic actions that can be taken to improve pastoral counseling and provide for healing among family members. The author, Rev. Cynthia Huling Hummel, of Lyons, NY, posed the question: Does preaching on forgiveness help forgiveness to happen? The author interviewed 20, 10 members from her church and 10 not. She preached often on the subject, featuring stories of transformation in life through forgiving. Healing of this wound is often a long and painful journey.  An important aspect of healing involves forgiveness.  This project will provide a scriptural understanding of the God who forgives, as well as offer an overview of several texts that call God's people to both claim their forgiveness and as well as to forgive.  The process of forgiveness will be explored and then applied to the unique situation of adoptees forgiving birth mothers.  A group of ten adoptees, all of whom are people of faith, will be interviewed, providing insight into the wound of relinquishment as well as their own understanding and perspective on the process of forgiveness. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the problem of forgiving, which has several dimensions.  Little work has been done on this issue, and the work which has been done is, to some degree, confusing.  The way the church has approached the issue of forgiveness has added to the ambiguity.  Chapter 2 is a study of biblical meanings of forgiveness, and it begins with some thoughts on sin. The latter part of this section is an effort to differentiate forgiveness from the atonement and from reconciliation.  The final step is to define forgiveness. Chapter 3 is a study of some developmental and social factors that have the potential to enable or inhibit forgiveness. Space is given to family relationships and the ways that families influence ability to enter into relationships with others, followed by an overview of shame and its manifestations. Using a model developed by Robert Enright from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, the author develops a pastoral approach to forgiveness. However, a careful reading of such books reveals that in a significant instance, most people are not OK. The significant instance involves the feelings persons identify as guilt, and the cause is frequently traced to a lack of understanding of the nature of guilt.  The crucial question addressed in this project is how a model can be established that will enable persons to own their guilt and be led by such feelings to release by experiencing God's grace.  A discussion follows on the genesis of guilt, the ways in which guilt manifests itself, and guilt from theological and psychological perspectives.  The model then examines the genesis of grace, how guilt and grace are held in tension in preaching that is true to the gospel, and how grace is encountered in guilt to heal and restore. Theological research reveals that though our memories will not release our hurts, there must be some sharing of God's grace and forgiveness between the members of the church. When a minister discovers a problem like nonforgiveness, there must be some constructive way to address the problem without inflaming past wounds.  The thesis proposes that an indirect way to address the problem is by the use of parables in the hermeneutical process as the subject of nonforgiveness is addressed in a series of
