The behavioral change targeted in this thesis was measured by two questionnaires distributed after two 'Friendship Sunday' worship services to which members of the local congregation had been encouraged to invite their 'seeker' friends.  The only difference between the first Sunday and the second was the treatment, the (ten) sermons.  The measure of success was a 10 percent increase in the number of church members who invited a 'seeker.'  By that measure the project failed. A questionnaire format was designed to ascertain the projected levels of comfort the respondent would have concerning his/her own and his/her spouse's friendships.  Questions were also asked about perceptions of the spouse's comfort levels.  Four different types of friendship were surveyed to minimize the possibility of bias had the survey only covered cross-gender friendships. Three scales, verified in previous studies, also were used. Kendall's tau-b correlations were used on the data.  The results showed that a majority of respondents were comfortable with all the types of friendship studied. However, there was a clear reduction in comfort for cross-gender friendships and mixed-gender group friendships. Males tended to be less comfortable than females with same-gender and cross-gender friendships, with females reporting less comfort for couple and group friendships. The psychological need for friendship in all stages of adulthood is documented.  Societal, sexual and ethical dilemmas about intimate friendships are described. Ten class sessions were conducted which were comprised of lectures, discussions, role-play and outside of class assignments. Two lecturers from the community shared insights on making friends and how to overcome barriers. A long-range plan for engaging a church in intentional friendship evangelism is proposed.
