The author employed a phenomenological method of research to discuss the caring interactions between the preacher and the bereaved. It examined the human phenomenon of grief and loss and emphasized the intentionality of the funeral sermon and pastoral care to deal with the phenomenon of the death of a loved one. The researcher approached this research project believing that certain metaphors would be more comforting to his members than others. Therefore, the researcher sought to discover which eternal life metaphors were more comforting through the use of a research survey. He then held research group interviews to learn why these metaphors were more comforting than others. The current age is marked by an existential sense of 'the power of the demonic,' an expression used by theologian A McGill to describe those forces in the world which seek to destroy persons through loss of identity.  Through Christ, an identity is given to individuals that cannot be removed despite the continued suffering and death in the world.
