The author studies spiritual development, using the theories of Kegan, Erikson, Fowler, Gilligan, and Loder. The history and theology of the catechism that helped shape the identity of the German Reformed people was researched. The author developed a pedagogy, based on Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, for teaching the catechism in the 21st century. A case study was developed based on a six week study of two churches in the United Church of Christ. The author made the following conclusions: 1) Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, as pedagogy, offers different approaches to adults in various stages of their spiritual development. 2) Adults do not have an adequate concept of sin; as a result they are confused about how grace is operative in their lives; therefore, they do not know what it means to live a life of gratitude. 3) Without a strong identity, based on core documents of the faith, there is no congregational loyalty. This author concludes that catechism could benefit our churches immeasurably."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127144109178880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:39:14.755Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:02:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:45:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1eb9d1bf-b1df-45c5-beda-8fcd704a01df","accessControl_ssim":["b2a75307-f538-43a5-8eb2-f3ab1eded0a5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Teach it again: using multiple intelligences in adult Christian education"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:02:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:02:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7e76b92c-9f65-45c1-940c-666c44dd20c3"],"hasLease_ssim":["4192a5e7-1f63-435d-be8b-afe0b372bb1e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Laura B Lewis"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William C Hassel"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Multiple intelligences","Christian education--Teaching methods","Christian education of adults","Gardner, Howard"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The foundation of this work is to use Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence as the basic teaching strategy in teaching adult Christian education. Yet there have been few established norms or standards for this practice. This study has been undertaken in an effort to identify and explore meaningful proclamation of the Word with children. Initial explorations include a theological and biblical rationale for the children's sermon, focusing on pertinent Old and New Testament texts. The study describes the meaning of Christian worship and includes a section on the importance of including children in worship and a discussion of what children bring to worship. This research supports a hermeneutic for children by presenting objections to children's sermons and defining the nature of a sermon. The hermeneutic centers on the theory of multiple intelligences developed by Howard Gardner. The study concludes that a children's sermon contributes to the unity of worship, is a form of catechesis, a conversation, and an agent of awe. Appropriate language and concepts for the sermon are suggested. A workshop model concludes the study. It presents the results of the research in a six hour format which is inductive and participatory. It is designed for all who have an interest in strengthening the children's sermon. Pitfalls in the children's sermon are highlighted. An annotated bibliography of resources for the children's sermon is featured."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129017590480896,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:09:01.445Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
