The writings of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Rainer Maria Rilke, and three modern poets (Machado, Milosz, and Stafford) are then used to illustrate how these poets used their poetry as a form of contemplative prayer. The issue of God-forsakeness was examined from a biblical and historical perspective.  Problems posed by this kind of existential theodicy were examined, as were solutions which have been proposed.  A questionnaire discovered that 56 per cent of the congregation admitted to having felt forsaken by God. Dealing with the theological image of an abandoning God, this project attempts to develop a theological praxis of ministry which will bring this congregation hope for the present and future. The project undertakes a discussion of loss and hope through breaking of bread, Bible study, and conversation.
