Project"],"creator_tesim":["Bright, James William"],"subject_tesim":["Grief","Church work with bereaved persons","Bereavement"],"abstract_tesim":["The intention of this project is to describe the opportunities pastors have as participants in making decisions related to funeral events, to identify the options which are characteristically available to pastors as participants in making those decisions, and to provide a procedure for pastors to describe and critique their own choices among the alternatives available to them. The purpose of this study is to address the issue of the pastor’s role as a participant in decisions affecting the funeral event. It is my intention and profound hope that this project will enable my pastoral colleagues and me to better minister to the bereaved at the occasion of a funeral by exercising more creative choices which might be available to us in such events. As such, it formed a segment within a clinical pastoral education program in a hospital setting.  A supervisory method of education was developed based upon adult learning theory. Theological, biblical and psychological foundations relating to grief are explored.  A history and description of establishing and conducting such a group at Carle Foundation Hospital for one year is given.  There are many common feelings, ideas, sensations, and behaviors among the bereaved, but they will be uniquely individual in their expression. The training program consisted of six sessions which made the counselors aware of the feelings of grief, and how they might effectively relate to persons in grief.  After training, seven of the ten persons trained were willing to be assigned to bereaved persons whom they contacted on a regular basis.  These contacts proved to be helpful to the bereaved persons over the six months to a year that they related to them.
