This project is an attempt to create such a program using Jewish tradition and synagogue programs and institutions.  The paper presents the effects and stages of the mourning process and relates them to traditional Jewish mourning ritual.  How the ritual actually aids grief work is then attested to through true life examples in Congregation Rodphey Shalom in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The report covers a period of one year.  Reflections are presented for each monthly session. Approximately twenty persons attended each meeting.  The project reflects theologically and psychologically on the issues of death, mourning, widowhood and God's will in people's lives.  The report examines these topics scripturally and historically. The author gathered data from biblical, theological, sociological, and psychological sources in order to design a training manual for training local church volunteers to minister as grief counselors.  Volunteers were selected by their minister and trained to understand the dynamics of grief, to counsel, and to make referrals when their counseling skills were limited.  Part I explains the dynamics of grief.  Part II presents the training manual.
