This dissertation examines the psycho-social aspects of grief and healing, the value of telling one's story in that process, and a study of Job and Psalms 112, 88, and 30 as theological commentary to the journey of grief and healing. The result is a grief workshop design, with comments by three evaluators. This thesis incorporates theoretical concepts from pastoral care, cultural anthropology and theological conclusions from psalms of communal lament to more adequately describe these processes. Twenty-three alcoholics and non-alcoholics were interviewed and the content of their responses was analyzed. Alcoholics had a higher number of alcohol-related losses and exhibited chronic and delayed grief reactions.  Alcohol suspended the grieving process.  Sobriety allowed the grief process to be completed.
