The Book of Jude is used as an example of dealing with Gnosticism's influence on the congregation. Then an historical analysis of Irenaeus's christology in his anti-Gnostic work shows the importance of affirming the deity of the historical Jesus when addressing Gnostic trends. The paper, after tracing the development of the 'quest' from its inception during the scientific revolution to our own day, and examining claims for its significance (or lack thereof) for the Christian faith, recommends that the pastor apply the historical information in a highly-calibrated fashion.
