God has always used poetry set to music to teach and proclaim His Word to His people. Throughout the Old Testament and New Testament, we see evidence of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs that contain the Word of God to help people read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest the truth of our Lord’s salvific plan. The first Christians continued to incorporate hymns and songs in their worship and daily life. Martin Luther and the reformers of the sixteenth century used hymnody as a vehicle to proclaim Christ and catechize the people to see that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ Jesus alone. Using a variety of methods set forth herein, this project set out to help people see true nature of Lutheran hymnody and how it can be used as a resource for daily Oratio, Meditatio, and Tentatio. These methods did indeed foster a change in people’s attitudes toward Lutheran hymnody and helped them see that the hymns – as an extension of God’s Word – can be an important part of their daily life in Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"_version_":1791135269391433728,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:23.628Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:58:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:45:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c41e7588-95b3-4ac6-ace4-e6eba9ae07a3","accessControl_ssim":["791567c9-b5de-4f58-b017-71165971a3e5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Psalms 'The standard liturgy and grand magazine of devotion for the Church in all ages' [Dr Robert Lee 1857]"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:58:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:45:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["79eee21b-4886-4cf5-9097-c44e4028a2ec"],"hasLease_ssim":["b347fb47-001d-4139-8359-acb57115b096"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas Galbraith","James Arthur Durlesser"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lezley J Stewart"],"keyword_tesim":["Relation (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible--Liturgical use","Hymns","Bible--Devotional use","Lee, Robert, 1804-1868","Bible. The class included psalms of David, Odes of Solomon, the Kontakia of Romanos the Melodist, the Carmina Gadelica, metrical psalms, and modern psalms being composed today in the eastern and western churches. The post-test reflected a preference change from saying the psalms in unison to singing psalms in the metrical way to hymn tunes. Their second choice was singing the psalms to simplified Anglican chant. Coptic chanting has been said by some to have influenced Celtic music. However, a Coptic Orthodox priest and bishop denied any similarity between Celtic music and Coptic music as represented in the chanting of psalm 44 on recordings entitled, Kilmartin Sessions and Sean-nos."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718047781486592,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:27:58.942Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:51:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:04:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d2f52ee5-f317-417e-97bc-cc3977682d6a","accessControl_ssim":["6a30710b-49a2-49b0-8ae9-946afb6d3704"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Using Hymns to preach biblical doctrine"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:51:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:09:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b4b412c6-a1f1-4c19-80ac-4de414e2b19f"],"hasLease_ssim":["4768d7c9-b96c-4b1b-81d7-0d0336aab8b8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Raymond A Delaurier"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Hermeneutics","Hymns"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis seeks to legitimatize the practice of using hymns to preach biblical doctrone. Its content includes the Bible's use of music in worship, celebration, and teaching. Both Moses and the Apostle Paul commanded that music be used in teaching doctrinal truth because of music's affect on the human mind, emotions, and memory. Scientific research cited verifies that the mind naturally responds to music, and the chemical response affects the memory center in the brain causing content to be memorized. It is the conclusion of this thesis that hymns can be used to teach biblical doctrine."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132535916331008,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:04:56.783Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:03:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:47:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3c13f747-6740-42be-ae5a-c3e3ea319f22","accessControl_ssim":["ab0efb3e-3667-4e5a-9abe-1613be7f5949"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Theological edification of laity through congregational singing in the Protestant Reformed Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:03:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:52:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7695f4f4-a415-47df-8105-a94f1364bd54"],"hasLease_ssim":["d0977e96-a1fd-478d-ab60-0da3cec57900"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Daniel Hoggatt"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mark R Griggs"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Singing--Religious aspects--Congregational churches","Hymns","Music--Religious aspects","Church music"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Many Presbyterian ministers claim that music has a profound impact on theological formation among laity, and that laity do not pay attention to the words they are singing and do not comprehend why a hymn has been chosen on a given Sunday. This dissertation proposes that pastors conscientiously plan and present corporate music accessing insights from educational theory. Pastors in three churches of different sizes and demographics in the San Francisco Presbytery were interviewed. Hundreds of pastors and educators from Canada and the United States were interviewed in groups. Literature was reviewed in the fields of the theology of music; educational theory; music the Reformed tradition, and current socio-cultural trends.
