Methods used were workshops, a live radio broadcast and surveys.  The curriculum bridged generational communication gaps and stressed the importance of spirituals, hymns, gospel, and contemporary Christian music using techniques developed to educate and stimulate creativity. The images of God are discussed in light of the early history of this movement.  Traditional criticism of this movement finds it superficial and a means of control used by threatened overlords. In the Reformation, congregational song was meant to serve a liturgical purpose. It briefly traces the historic use of participatory hymn singing and the development of new hymns. Research is centered around an analysis of the favorite hymns of members of a small Connecticut church with members from divergent denominational backgrounds.  The study includes congregational survey results and interview comments of respondents.  The author, a woman pastor, concludes that inclusive hymns concerning language, race and disabilities are important for all people, especially those who have been marginalized from society. Hymns sung during a two-year period were analyzed and described using standard categories of systematic theology.  The study concluded that both churches' hymnodies demonstrated comprehensive theological development in the key areas of belief. While the hymnodies' teachings are biblical, several areas were noted where discrepancies might have occurred between people's beliefs and the beliefs they expressed in their singing. This dissertation traces the tradition of hymns and hymnals, biblically and historically, then, in its project, proposes new indices for any hymnal, to aid in bringing the tradition of hymns to life in the local church.  The project is based on The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990).  A chronology of both texts and tunes is offered, with a historical narrative index describing the historical and theological movements in hymnody. A phenomenological approach is applied to this qualitative research project.
