A historical, biblical and theological study of the doctrine of the image of God was conducted in order to undergird the concept of human worth as taught in Purkey's model.  The social and psychological foundations for the invitational model are also investigated.  A control group and an experimental group each consisting of twenty people were selected from the church.  The experimental group was taught Purkey's model.  Pre/post-tests were given to each group.  The post-test revealed that the experimental group had become more inviting. A significant relationship among these three elements, previously overlooked in the psychological and pastoral care literature, was hypothesized.  The psychoanalytic concept of transference and the theological use of metaphor were used to examine these connections.  Taking a qualitative research approach, the author interviewed four female pastoral counselors. Data was analyzed using six themes of sibling/work relationships which emerged in the literature review. While many of the existing models of intervention are useful and worthwhile, this thesis will suggest that certain key ingredients are sometimes avoided or neglected in an attempt to move quickly toward a satisfactory resolution of a problem. Effective problem solving, especially when dealing with a difficult person, cannot always be reduced to a simple step-by-step approach.  The purpose of this thesis will be to explore and present another option for dealing with the presence of a difficult person that is both biblical and practical. A quasi-experimental social research design and relevant literary research were used in studying relational evangelism.  The experimental group received the teaching; the control group did not receive any training. Results were compared in pretests and posttests.  It was concluded the Christ did use relational evangelism as a primary tool of evangelizing others.  The adaptation of learnings gleaned from the study was applied to a local church setting. It reports on evaluations made by students who participated in the program and on a correlational study carried out on the relationship between interpersonal skills training and change in the self-concept of students.  The design was based on a two-group pretest/posttest follow-up model using the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale.  A statistical analysis of all TCS subscale and total scores disclosed no systematic effect of the intervention on self-concept.
