It included three main components: Biblical research on longevity in ministry, using as a model the life, ministry, and leadership of Moses; contemporary literature research on issues influential to longevity, in particular, the pastor's sense of 'calling'; and conducted field research with 48 pastors in the Christian Reformed Church in North America, the great majority of whom served long-term (15 years and more) in their current ministry leadership pastoral capacities. The goal was to find factors that contribute to the after-care worker's tenure. Four case studies focused on questions related to burnout, secondary trauma, support and training. Significant findings revealed issues in categories of motivation, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, vicarious victimization, compassion fatigue, self-care, support and training. After-care workers universally reported significant burnout and secondary trauma. Training, support and healthy self-care measures were found to be a contributing factor of longevity. Sermons and a survey drafted by the researcher served as the basis for determining their fulfillment level. Employing the qualitative surveys and questionnaires, they were able to express their fulfillment levels. Consequently, the study revealed that the majority expressed fulfillment in their respective roles. This project discovered and analyzed the potential for pastoral longevity in the Evangelical Free Church of America.  Advantages and disadvantages of both short-term and long-term pastorates were given.  The case was made biblically and practically for long-term pastorates.  EFCA pastors who had been in their churches ten years or longer were surveyed.  Longevity factors were then identified, corroborated, and analyzed.  Demographic factors concerning both pastors and their churches were included. Extensive discussion of the philosophical and theological dimensions of Appreciative Inquiry, an experientially based organizational development tool, is included. It examines the influence of job needs/values on individuals by considering four work groups in a Midwest electric utility. Ideal job needs/values are compared to the present job needs/values to see what workers wanted from their ideal job.  These needs/values are correlated with the morale of these individuals and with unobtrusive measures of morale. Specific personal values and job needs/values are determined to be dominant.  Certain needs are descriptive and are met in the participants' present jobs.  Yet, these are not the needs that these individuals want their ideal job to fulfill. A study of the reigns of Saul, David and Solomon provides models for the exercise of authority among the people of God. Special emphasis is placed on the paradoxical notion of success: Solomon, the most 'successful' of the Israelite kings, proved unable to preserve the united monarchy for his successors. Findings include information on who these people are, how they viewed their pastoral work while in it, the pressures and processes of leaving it, and how they experience life with the pastorate in their past and a new career before them.  The survey shows that, according to overall mean and rank, the primary stress in ministry and, according to higher values only, the major reason for the respondents leaving the pastorate is church conflict. The ex-pastor experienced role conflict and, while his exodus was multi-determined, he sought for consistency between his individual values and his occupation.  A personal evaluation of the project concludes this
