common in the United States where the non-Jewish partner is usually Christian at least by family upbringing. Though this is a frequent occurrence, the nature and unique stresses present in this type of family is not well-understood or explored within the counseling literature. The term Jewish intercultural families is used in this thesis rather that the more commonly used term, interfaith, because it is the emphasis of this thesis that while the couples' differences may contain a faith element, it is in essence a cultural difference. An approach is explored which encourages couples to think more broadly about the range of options available for them, by exploring five categories: identity, community, traditions, faith and extended family. Until recently, marriage and family therapists have been very reluctant to separate the ideas of religion, spirituality and culture. It is the conviction of this thesis that not only is this a critical part of helping Jewish intercultural families, but that a Christian approach to counseling in particular can help couples see the possibility of spiritual unity while maintaining communal and ethnic diversity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131942813433856,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:31.156Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:37:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:14:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1bf22f36-b878-445c-8d44-12df42901564","accessControl_ssim":["cc98675c-24ff-4094-8da0-770de62b97ee"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Partners in faith and action: a statement of agreement and plan for urban ministry between the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the Union for Reform Judaism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:37:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:57:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d5bd5c6d-268b-4803-9acb-99031004a5c9"],"hasLease_ssim":["aebda24b-621a-4b39-a088-e279ec44e1cf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Fred D Smith"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Synagogue affiliation rates are on a steady decline, and American Jews, particularly younger Jews, have lost the historic value of affiliation. Method: a sociological questionnaire was implemented on a select group of Michigan Adventists and three focus groups; a manual was constructed and refined in two pilot lay-training seminars. Results: Adventists had stereotypical perceptions of Jewish people, but were willing to be educated for interaction. Evaluations revealed that participants' understanding of Jewish people improved. Follow-up suggestions were recommended. Conclusions: Adventists' attitudes toward Jews are influenced by theology, a lack of familiarity, ignorance, and stereotypes. Lay and clergy training seminars are needed. Participants wrote journals weekly and reflected together on their experiences.
