(Carl Gustav), 1875-1961","Psychotherapy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper by an ordained psychotherapist presents one facet of the on-going integration of depth-psychological theory with pastoral practice.  It focuses on the Shadow, an aspect of human nature and a source of difficulty for the Christian church which has not been dealt with realistically.  Jung's concept of the Shadow is examined.  Examples of the operation of the Shadow include: the Iranian hostage crisis, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, the moral majority, the Ku Klux Klan.  A biographical incident is recounted. The traditional anti-Shadow position of the Christian church is described, with examples of theological, doctrinal, moral-ethical, liturgical and architectural over-emphasis on the white-bright-light side.  The consequence of over-valuing of purity is described: a repressed Shadow which operates secretly from the unconscious, producing various unwholesome effects. A theological-psychological model relating Shadow and Christ envisions the 'ultimate context' within which each unique therapy unfolds. Specific concepts used are the collective unconscious, symbol, archetype, individuation, and the Christ symbol.  The interplay of Jungian psychology, theology, and scripture form the hermeneutic.  The concept of miracle and trends in wholistic medicine are briefly considered. Its importance lies primarily in the fact that it can be utilized by the pastor while counseling in the local church.  The theory and practice of dream use has been used largely in the present century by psychoanalysts for the treatment of psychological illness.  This is the first attempt in a doctoral thesis to apply dream sequences of healthy females to the developmental tasks of the life structure for use by pastors in counseling.  It is my belief that the intentional awareness of the use of dreams can provide an approach to the care of parishioners which enriches all elements of the counseling process.
