This project examined the initiation tradition of the two tribes to identify elements that the church could use to make the Christian faith more meaningful to them. The author used seminars and multiple intervention tools with selected members of the tribes. The author and nine members of St John's United Methodist Church in Gbarnga, Liberia, studied the book of Exodus and focused on issues of contextualization. They identified issues common to Hebrew and Kpelle cultures, and considered tribal elements such as proverbs, stories, idioms, and theology. The result was the production of a Bible study teacher's guide on Exodus, and an awareness by participants of anwers to their questions about how to make the Christian Church relevant in their context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129255235551232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:48.082Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:16:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:42:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f4ec2d2d-2c06-4cce-a578-5d27762ce0f6","accessControl_ssim":["418a28b6-fbc9-48d1-abae-3f73ebc692ec"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Story as a medium of preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:16:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:07:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cbb25660-f3c3-4cb7-80ae-72d0fa6720e5"],"hasLease_ssim":["10a6a78d-0371-499f-a3f7-93c6feb18f8d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Virgil P Howard"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"location_tesim":["Liberia"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David Ellsworth Upp"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Sermons","Gbarnga School of Theology (Liberia)","Kpelle (African people)","Narrative preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project's purpose was to evaluate various categories of story sermons as to their effectiveness. The five categories were: 1) vivid retelling of a Biblical passage (usually a narrative), 2) retelling/updating of a Biblical parable, 3) 'baptizing' a secular story, 4) a sermon centered upon a single image, and 5) an original story (written or extemporaneous). Two sermons were preached in each category in worship services in Liberia, West Africa, where the author taught Bible and preaching courses. The use of the fourth category is discouraged. The others are affirmed by careful analysis. Story sermons take their place alongside expository forms, because of differences in ways of hearing/thinking and to fit various texts more appropriately."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127341089423360,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:42:22.610Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":2,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
