The student worked with an eight member lay committee over a period of five months studying such terminology as prophetic, affirmation, confrontation, and hermeneutic; studying the scriptural texts the student had chosen upon which to base his sermons; preaching four sermons in his local church; and meeting with the lay committee following the delivery of each sermon for response/feedback.  The student concluded that preaching, the intent of which is Christian proclamation, is Bible centered.  The student also concluded that all preaching should include both dimensions of 'the prophetic element in preaching,' which are affirmation and confrontation. The major issue addressed was how life-situation preaching can be done in such a context.  The legitimacy of an evangelical use of life-situation preaching was established in Scritpure and church history.  Questionnaires were used to discover the most frequently occurring problems of members; sermons were prepared and delivered on the seven most common problems, including anxiety, anger and discouragement.  Members of the congregation evaluated each sermon.  Approximately twenty percent of them said they received help or sought out further counsel with the pastor.  Evening service attendance increased ten percent. It was based on the theological affirmations that true preaching extends the work of the Incarnation; that worship provides experiences including: providence, faith, grace, repentance, communion, vocation, and an awareness of the holy; and that the thrust of all pastoral work, including preaching, is the communication of the love and acceptance of God.  Ten people met for an hour each Sunday, discussed the sermon and reviewed the Scripture for the next week.  A feedback form was given to the congregation each week.  The results were more effective communication, better constructed sermons, and more effective integration of preaching and pastoral care. A 110-item questionnaire surveyed 239 clergy and 261 laity with a 66 percent overall return.  Responses indicated that both clergy and laity are open to explicit faith healing within the church if approached from a rational, critical perspective.  It appears that explicit faith healing should be a part of the church's ministry. The purpose of this is to help lay members of the contemporary evangelical church recover a sense of 'ownership' in the Bible, thereby allowing the written word to become an effective tool in critiquing, among other things, secular tendencies among modern evangelical Christians. The project also seeks to affirm laity in the process of ministerial formation. Three program goals include: (1) to establish local church lay support committees for students, (2) to hold a three hour conference, involving faculty, students, and laity, on laity's involvement in theological education, and (3) provide supervisory training for laity through on-site visits by faculty. Discussions of hopes, fears, problems and reservations were analyzed and compared with Vatican II and post-conciliar theologies of the diaconate, presbyterate and church order.  The resulting theology involves the complementarity of roles of laity, diaconate, presbyterate and episcopacy in pursuing the mission of the church. Priests will only accept the diaconate when they understand why it was restored. Understanding--and definition--can be achieved through massive catechesis.
