This study sought to gather information on successful and unsuccessful transitions by focusing on three participants in each transition:  the predecessor, the successor, and the congregation.  Twenty pastors from the Western New York Conference of the United Methodist Church were chosen to be interviewed based on meeting the following criteria:  1) full-time pastors appointed at some point in their vocation to succeed a pastor who had served the congregation for nine years or more; 2) for those currently serving in that position, a minimum tenure of two years was required; and 3) for those not currently serving in that position, the term of service needed to have ended within the past five years. Data analysis was based on the transcripts of those interviews.  In regard to the three participants in pastoral transitions the major findings included:  1) the choices the predecessor made in relating to the congregation and supporting the new pastor were more important than whether he or she remained in the church and community; 2) a healthy process of grieving and letting go of the predecessor was critical if the congregation was to welcome and follow the new pastor; 3) the incoming pastor's ability to understand the congregation and exert appropriate leadership was essential in each transition.  The increasing length of pastorates in the United Methodist Church requires attention to the dynamics of succession following long-term pastorates. The paper posits that changes in the understanding of ordination led to changes in expectation, hence conflict around the pastor.  A survey instrument was developed, sent to 91 persons, and 35 responded. The pastor/researcher describes several expository methods and provides distinctive elements of expository preaching from literature in the field of homiletics. A lay committee assisted in the sermon preparation process by familiarizing themselves with the biblical text, assisting the pastor with the sermon development from the text, listening to the sermon in the congregational context, and evaluating the sermon according to criteria consistent with the essential elements. The lay committee met with the pastor seven times over a six-week process. Project conclusions include increased understanding of the homiletical process and informed listening on the part of the lay committee. The pastor noted a clearer sense of the biblical text by viewing it through lay and pastoral perspectives. The thesis project is a personal journey of exploring the meaning of sacramental preaching in this setting from the point of view of a chaplain to a congregation whose members are not only very old, but also suffer from one or more impairments of aging that adversely effect their ability to hear a traditional sermon. I had a hunch that there was a strong link between my preaching and the pastoral work that I do daily for them. That link involved what were for me holy encounters that seemed sacramental within the pastoral relationships: praying or talking about something very sacred, or discovering unexpected love and grace. I discovered during the project what it was about sacramental preaching that seemed to reveal or announce something about those holy encounters. Participants met weekly for three months, presented verbatim and reflected on how they were learning to share the vision.  The group discovered that developing shared vision is an ongoing process requiring deliberate reflection and accountability.  Leaders seeking to do so must comprehend the vision profoundly, be genuinely committed to it and learn how to refer to the vision statement explicitly in all aspects of their ministry.
