To be known requires respect and understanding of their communities’ pastoral needs and religious practices.  Sadly, many leaders have a colonial mentality that foments stereotypes and even prejudice toward Hispanics. The only way to move beyond this mentality is to sincerely enter into relationships with Latino(a)s, and understand how they see themselves.  This respectful understanding must begin with our Church leaders. Latino/as want to share their cultural and religious practices that connect them to their families and ancestors. Although the Hispanic Catholics play a vital role in the life of the Church, barriers to inclusion remain. Hispanic Catholics want to fully participate in the Church’s mission to serve the whole community.  They are eager to share their gifts through collaborative service in their parishes.\r\n\r\nIn this thesis project I reveal Hispanic communities that are already present but not often seen. I introduce their religious practices to the larger community including church leaders. I focus on the religious practice called Adoración Nocturna Mexicana (Mexican Nocturnal Adoration). A practice where members of the Mexican Catholic communities spend the night in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar where, like all Catholics, they worship the true presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated hosts reposited in the Tabernacle and exposed in the monstrance on the altar during nocturnal adoration vigil. The study shows how Hispanics have historically and are presently practicing nocturnal adoration as part of their popular religious practices.  More importantly, I explore what drives them toward these religious practices. By listening to their stories, I have heard their heartfelt voices as they express their needs and desires, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. I also demonstrate how they emulate the Samaritan woman at the well (John: 4-42), and like her are moved to evangelization when they also come to the realization of being known and therefore loved by Christ. \r\n\r\nI delve into the pastoral, social, and theological dimensions of Hispanic popular Catholicism and devotional practices, referred to as Santo praxis and lo cotidiano (the everyday).  \r\n\r\nThe goal is to demonstrate how popular religious devotion is forged in the historical struggles of people who are oppressed. Beginning in January of 1976 and continuing through December of 1978, this experimental ministry took place with the inactive members of the congregation of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Annville, Pennsylvania. During this three-year period the pastoral ministry in the parish was carried out in the normal manner. This project became an integral part of the parish work and was seldom mentioned, in order to avoid affecting the results. The members of the parish were aware that I was involved in a doctoral project, but very few had any knowledge of the area being studied. Further, the project did not alter the remainder of the parish program in any significant manner, with the exception of the fact that a number of the inactive members responded in some measurable way. The project is, therefore, a plan which can be readily adapted and utilized by any parish in which inactive members are a concern. The pastor needed help administering pastoral care throughout the congregation as he could not provide adequate care to the entire congregation alone. Thus, Sunday school teachers and leaders received training in selected pastoral care competencies to enhance the ministry of the church as it continued to grow.\r\n\r\nI began by researching the field of pastoral care to identify essential pastoral care competencies. The congregation provided input regarding which pastoral care competences were essential needs of Thompson Baptist Church. With the competencies determined, I, as the pastor and project director, designed a training curriculum to teach the essential competencies to the adult Sunday school teachers and leaders. The chapter presents the context of the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary as uniquely suited to the aims of the thesis project: developing the Affective Feedback model which relies upon the spiritual experience of the parishioner-listener as the source of feedback to the seminarian-preacher.\r\n\r\nChapter Two presents the central metaphor of a bridge to explain the theoretical frameworks of the Affective Feedback model. The chapter establishes three theological pillars for this bridge: the pneumatology of the Gift of God, the sensus fidei, and Ignatian affective discernment.\r\n\r\nChapter Three explains how listener-oriented preaching serves as the homiletic suspension cables of the Affective Feedback bridge. The practical ecclesiology of Pope Francis, the inductive preaching homiletic of Fred Craddock, and insights into listener relevance from Karla Bellinger manifest the tensile strength that feedback requires.\r\n\r\nChapter Four introduces interdisciplinary wisdom from communication studies in the business world to establish the deck of the Affective Feedback bridge. In conversation with Douglas Stone, Sheila Heen, and Therese Huston, the chapter lays out the practical theology of effective feedback conversations.\r\n\r\nChapter Five details the Affective Feedback model, this thesis project’s ministerial intervention. The chapter gives thick descriptions of the institutional context, participants, structure, and evaluation of the ministerial intervention.\r\n\r\nChapter Six analyzes the limitations and data of the intervention. The analysis examines seminarian interviews and parishioner questionnaires to demonstrate how parishioners moved toward basing their feedback on affective impact and how seminarians grew in appreciation for parishioner’s praise. The chapter concludes by suggesting the next steps for Affective Feedback’s improvement and
