This project experiments with sermon and worship planning in a retreat setting involving clergy and laity, with lectionary texts as a focus of activities. Participants grow spiritually and a deeper relationship among participants evolves.  For four years the author invited laypersons into the sermon process.  Laypersons researched and studied texts on their own, and group reflection produced preaching  material.  A high degree of spiritual and intellectual growth was evident among the laypersons invited into the process. Included are the family systems theories of Bowen and Friedman, McGoldrick and Walters' feminist critiques, Aristotle's definition of friendship, Buber's I-Thou theory of relationships, a survey of presbytery leaders, and interviews with pastors successful and unsuccessful in defining, establishing, and maintaining Christian friendship. An effort to build a trust relationship had to begin.  To accomplish this, the congregation had to understand the pastor in certain images. These images, servant, child, friend, and partner, would be topics of sermons describing the congregation and pastor. This understanding would assure the acceptance of pastor and congregation.  The enlistment of a small response group of church members and a spiritual mentor proved to be helpful. The thesis is that ministry is enhanced, and joy grows when the partnership between pastor(s), staff and members is appreciated and celebrated.  To attain this goal, the project looks at the doctrine of church and ministry, as understood by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and applies it to systems theory. A quantitative, descriptive method of research using a mailed questionnaire was employed.  Many differences were found. In today's economy a full-time priest serving one altar places severe demands on these congregations.  As small churches over-invest financially in clergy deployment they also over-invest emotionally.  An atmosphere is created where clergy are expected to over-function to match the high level of investment.  The stresses caused by this phenomena are causing clergy 'burn-out' while these small cures are becoming harder to fill.  The project/thesis explores the connection between financial over-investment and the emotional expectations to over-function.
