He developed a liturgy to provide a guide for the nine new groups.  He promoted this healing support group possibility within the local church and larger community and conducted a dedication service following the training. It makes a shift from factors that lead the church to be pastor-centered and also lead pastors into the hierarchical form of leadership ministry.  The initial chapter examines the foundational notions of Christian spirituality, of leadership, and of the laity.  The second chapter reviews the biblical definition and models of the church as the community of faith.  The third chapter explores the mission as evangelism, Missio Dei, liberation and inculturation, and reflects the ministry of all Christians. Its theological justification comes from the fact that pastor and laity alike share in the shepherding ministry of Jesus Christ in the church.  To both equip my present lay shepherds in the 'basics' of pastoral care and to motivate them to train, in turn, still more shepherds, I proceeded as follows: I led ten of these lay shepherds through a series of eight 'shepherding seminars' on the biblical/theological justifications for giving pastoral care; the four 'givens' of human life; the ten stages of grief; the differentiation of different types of depression; and the development of empathetic listening skills. At the conclusion of these studies, each of the now 'trained' shepherds was assigned some aspect of the aforementioned topics and asked to teach it to a small cadre of 'untrained' shepherds newly recruited from the congregation at large. Seven individuals were trained to teach in three designated religious groups.  Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormonism and the New Age movement were studied through lectures, field trips, audiovisual materials, private research and personal interviews.  The seven individuals trained seventy others within the context of two Associational Interfaith Witness conferences. In the research project nine consultant interventions were developed and then evaluated by clergy and laity.  The researcher concludes that consultants can express their ecclesiological position to client congregations as long as this nurtures the consulting relationship.  He proposes that congregational support for baptismal ministry can be ethically influenced through personal self-disclosure by the consultant and a mutual exploration of ecclesiology. This vision encouraged the author, integrating his eleven years of pastoral experience in the Hong Kong Methodist Church, to implement a fourteen three-hour weekly session program for a group of married couples at the Cleveland Chinese Christian Church, Ohio.  The result was obvious: each couple successfully formed a family group and helped to nurture the whole congregation.  Later, new missions were started.
