The project director developed a training class using resources suggested by Bill Donahue and Randall Neighbour.  The nine didactic sessions written led participants into a greater evaluation and understanding of the components of group health.  The sessions included the vision and values of Faith Promise Church, spiritual leadership, the stages of group life, analysis of the five purpose model of groups (worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism), and a review of the ultimate goal of group life: multiplication. The process focused on developing the spiritual discipline of listening in scripture, prayer, and community in aligning the leadership's core values, vision and mission. The leadership team participated in individual and group processes designed to transform listening. As a result, participants reported an increased sensitivity to God's self-communication through deeper listening in scripture and prayer. At the end of the process, the participants committed to reproduce this process with a group the following semester. Learning theory and sociological dynamics helped shape the small group atmosphere. The project rendered that character formation effectively takes place in a small group setting. During a six-month period, twenty-four lay leaders utilized Participatory Action Research by engaging in cycles of planning, action, and reflection. Findings from the project included characteristics of effective leadership, leadership expectations, and the importance of resolute action to achieve initiatives for revitalization. Participatory Action Research (PAR) provides an intentional systematic approach for this endeavor. Nine cycles of planning, reflection, and practice of spiritual disciplines resulted in a gradual transformation among participants. Key elements of pastoral life are noted as inseparable from the process of spiritual formation: calling, commitment, community, and conflict. The change experienced during the research process became a catalyst for initiating spiritual formation processes for pastoral leaders. This project evolved because I have seen the collateral damage that has occurred between incumbent and emerging leaders.  It is based upon the research completed by Ron Carcucci in Leadership divided: what emerging leaders need and what might be missing.I brought together a selected group of incumbent and emerging leaders to see how the relationship gap that separates them could be reduced. I invited them to join me for an eight-session learning experience. The specific facet of mentoring considered is discipleship in leadership development and deployment. A 13-week mentoring program on leadership development and deployment was developed which focused on character, content, and competency. Lay-leaders where mentored through the project both individually and in small groups. Those team-members being led assessed the lay-leaders before and after the mentoring program. The lay-leaders' significantly improved in the areas of 'follower-ship' skills, knowledge and understanding in the discipline of leadership, and leadership skills. The project seeks to design a process for developing biblically healthy pastoral leadership. Chapter 1 presents the purpose, goals, context, rationale, definitions, and limitations of the project. Chapter 2 discusses biblical and theological perspectives on leadership in the lives of Jesus and Paul. Specifically, this chapter develops the role of servant leadership in the ministries of Jesus and Paul, and espouses it as the biblical model. Chapter 3 surveys leadership as an intellectual discipline and presents a model for biblically healthy pastoral leadership. This chapter also explores the dynamics of team based leadership and gives examples of disciplines common to great leaders. Chapter 4 explains the creation and implementation of the Arizona Leadership Network. Attention is given to the five developmental phases of the project and to the transformational development of a leader from personal leadership to organizational effectiveness. Chapter 5 provides an evaluation of the project goals along with modifications that could be made to strengthen the project for future use.
