This project focuses upon identifying foundational traits of effective leaders so that readers will have guidance for the nurture and selection of congregational leaders for mid-size congregations. Utilizing ecclesiastical and secular literature related to leadership and a qualitative study of effective leaders in a particular congregation, the findings of this project result in a description of critical leadership traits that enable an atmosphere for Christian ministry. The researcher seeks to answer the question: what can be done to encourage the development of a leader's heart, so that he or she becomes more useful, effective, and productive in God's administration of the world? The researcher of this applied research project seeks to identity stimuli that motivate a leader to choose God's will in place of one's own will.  One attempt the researcher has made to develop a leader's heart is through a leadership development program he calls 'faithful serving: lessons for entrusted leaders.' What would it take for a congregation to experience that type of revitalization?  Will a 'transformed' leader produce a 'transformed' church?  Can the traditional disciplines of prayer, reading scripture, and experiencing true solitude and true community make a difference in the lives of busy, proud, 'know it all' Christians?  I am convinced that significant spiritual transformation is possible in the church today -- and I have already begun to experience it at First Presbyterian Church.  The most critical factor so far in transformation for this church has been personal transformation in the life of its pastor.  This project attempted to promote spiritual transformation in the church by recognizing and supporting a continued process of transformation in the life of the pastor and by utilizing a family systems approach to change. Major steps included self-awareness and living into the person God has created; living into the particularities of one's giftedness and situation; utilizing long-held spiritual traditions of prayer, solitude, community and spiritual direction; living as a non-anxious presence and recognizing that one individual's change within the system forces the system itself to change. The overarching research question was 'What leadership practices of senior pastors of Southern Baptist Churches in South Carolina with 500 or more worship attenders have enabled those churches to grow rapidly for three consecutive years?'  Grounded Theory was the method used in this research.  A 360 degree interview approach with the senior pastor and three key leaders in each church provided the data for research. The objective was to obtain practical information and valuable insight into the strategies used to successfully establish independent congregations. The project rests on the belief that church governance is qualitatively different from the business management model of secular organizations. He also wanted to determine if a focused study of one theological school of thought, process theology, could be a catalyst for leadership development.  Following the seven-month program, two members of the project team offered ministries of their own.  The group's focus on process theology, though having little effect on the members' theological positions, did have a positive effect of increasing their attentiveness to the nuances of theological understandings. Cultural change, if not initiated or fed by a crisis, is very difficult. The strategy utilized a qualitive research method and included revisions to the new member class and the recruiting and training of shepherd's partners, who helped new members through the initial phase of assimilation in the following areas: completion of the new member class, development of relationships, engagement in ministry opportunities, and receiving information that fosters their spiritual growth.
