A questionnaire was administered to ascertain how lay and clergy leaders understand spiritual leadership.  A theology of spiritual leadership is presented, discussing the scriptural and historical roots of spiritual leadership and describing the spiritual leader in terms of servanthood, empowerment, discernment, spiritual experience, prayer, and sanctification. This study focuses upon the elders' 'personal faith, knowledge of the doctrine, government, and discipline contained in the Constitution of the Church; and the duties of the office' (G-14.0205). Presbyterians hold the office of elder on an equal basis with the office of minister of Word and Sacrament.  Based upon this equality, this training course reflects the concept of 'team ministry.'  An underlying premise for the course is that a church can only be strong as its leadership.  An examination is conducted of the biblical principles of leadership in both the Old and New Testaments. An exploration is undertaken of the ways in which the Presbyterian system of government embodies the principles of team ministry. Studies of the ways in which adults mature in faith are presented and analyzed.  The result of the research is a five-week training course for newly elected elders. Two different models were tested: first, a model based on the author's understanding of how Jesus developed leaders; second, a model from the Industrial Areas Foundation.  On the surface the two models have similarities; however, there are points of difference in terms of method, theology, ecclesiology, and ethical principle. The overriding theme of the workshops was to teach adaptable leadership techniques, made applicable to the church setting.  The result of the project has seen the subject church begin to thrive. The methodology employed the Factorial Survey Approach among laypersons in congregations of American Baptist, Church of the Brethren, and General Conference Mennonite denominations.  The hypothesis that a double standard exists in laypersons' expectations of the integrity of ordained versus non-ordained church leadership was not supported by the data collected.
