The first chapter defines the Word of God for three key Reformed Theologians: John Calvin, the Westminster Divines, and Karl Barth.  These definitions are then connected to how they understand the covenant relationship between God and humanity.  Covenant relationship is then related to the essential elements of Reformed worship. It shows how historic liturgy is contemporary by nature, and can be used in a modern and relevant way.  Educational tools were developed for use in both the worship and classroom settings.  Survey results provide information toward tool development and effectiveness. The setting is western Chesterfield County, Virginia, whose population will grow from 14,700 to 32,700 in the next ten years. The author is the founding pastor of a United Methodist Church chartered in 1987 in Chesterfield. Two challenges provided the impetus for the project. One, finding a common religious practice among a diverse people, and two, expanding participation in the liturgy. Advent and Christmas Eve worship services were selected to meet both challenges.
