It is hoped that this will lead to an increase in confidence in discussing the matter with those who come from denominational backgrounds which find this confessional Lutheran practice unpalatable. To this end, a study and accompanying materials will be prepared from a biblical and historical analysis of the doctrine to strengthen the resolve and comfort of those who attend the study in discussing and, if necessary, winsomely defending this teaching to their friends and family who disagree with it. Success in this matter will be measured by a combination of surveys and personal interviews with congregation members and study participants, particularly to see if the use of case studies was effective in the teaching of this doctrine. The goal was to lead participants to the development of a set of criteria to examine hymn and praise song lyrics for optimum selection. Methodology included the development and presentation of a Bible study which addressed topics related to the problem and introduced criterium, an initial survey which gauged participants perspectives on singing, worship, and hymn and praise song selection, and a final survey, exactly like the first. The procedure was to introduce the first survey, present the Bible study, and then introduce the same survey to determine if any changes took place in participants’ perspectives during the Bible study. Results demonstrate strong participation from those who attend both the traditional and contemporary services, general agreement with the criteria presented, and large consensus regarding the need to worship God, and to have theologically accurate lyrics in hymns and praise songs. Surveys and Bible study discussion also demonstrated a lack of enthusiasm for the particularities of Lutheran doctrine and focus on the action of man in worship as opposed to God. Conclusions include that there exists a need for further emphasis and teaching on Lutheran theology, the priority of God’s action in worship, and the purpose of worship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"_version_":1791135412664664064,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:40.264Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-12-13T13:48:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:46:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"031e72d6-eb77-4091-8680-54c58f27ee90","accessControl_ssim":["02f204e6-73c6-4769-9672-edbd0521fd4a"],"depositor_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"title_tesim":["\"I Came That They May Have Life\": Cultivating a Culture of Life in the Lutheran Parish"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-12-13T13:48:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:12:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4ccc86a4-a1f2-4d79-b3e8-629f7bf825a3"],"hasLease_ssim":["ce363ade-89a8-47c0-a77f-dfb58938206f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Peter Scaer"],"committee_member_tesim":["Arthur Just Jr.","Gifford Grobien"],"year_tesim":["2023"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. In America the Church for many years enjoyed a preferred place in society, and the confession of the Church was seen as being in conformity with the world. This is no longer the case, and has not been for several decades. While the church has been on the front lines for the battle over abortion since 1973, the devil was busy attacking not only children, but also man and woman and marriage. \r\nThe purpose of this dissertation is briefly to introduce to congregations how to teach on life issues using the Scriptures, the Lutheran Confessions, and the Divine Service of the Lutheran Church. The project I conducted at Bethlehem and St. Peter’s Lutheran Parish gave a brief overview of marriage, the biblical perspectives on man and woman, the blessings of children, and Satan’s assault on these good gifts from God. The project had a second portion of study, which dealt with Luther’s three estates as he outlines in the Fourth Commandment in the Large Catechism. Finally, the project engaged with the Kansas District Life Conference of which I oversaw planning, leading, and advertising within the district. \r\nThe participants in the project were members of Bethlehem and St. Peter’s who attended the nine week bible study, which began with a questionnaire to obtain a baseline of understanding concerning life issues and political issues in our country, as well as frequency of attendance, political views, the age of each participant, and gender. The Bible study was broken into three sections, the first dealing with marriage, man and woman, and children, using the example of the Holy Family. The second section dealt with Satan’s assault on these gifts which God gives, and matters in the culture we are facing today such as transgenderism, toxic masculinity, feminism, and homosexual marriage. The final three weeks dealt with the Christian life within Luther’s three estates: home, church, and state. \r\nFollowing the Bible study the participants were asked to complete a second questionnaire to indicate changes in opinion or knowledge on life issues and political issues, and if they found this method useful to help confess the truth of God’s Word in the world. Four participants were asked to give one hour interviews with me to further reflect upon their answers, as well as give other thoughts on the project and the Christian life. The results were studied and reflected upon at the end of this paper, as well as my concluding thoughts and areas of further study. \r\nIn summary, catechesis on life issues has to be addressed in the home and the school as well as the church, with pastors assisting parents to teach and lead their families. As the Church finds herself at odds with the world, and the threat of persecution looms over us, it is all the more important that we speak the truth of God’s Word and guard ourselves and children through faithful instruction so we may face the world with courage."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu","ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135177922052096,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:46:56.396Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-12-12T19:23:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:48:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5af2d202-5067-4a1f-8a4a-4af72e18714d","accessControl_ssim":["8121e036-1607-43e8-80ab-4531516935be"],"depositor_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"title_tesim":["Lutheran Hymnody as a Resource for Oratio, Meditatio, and Tentatio"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-12-12T19:23:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:48:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4c8f486b-30d2-4f01-a854-32642f54364e"],"hasLease_ssim":["689da56e-4cc5-4d19-ae5e-615ab672c0b1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard Resch"],"committee_member_tesim":["Richard Stuckwisch","Peter Scaer"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. God has always used poetry set to music to teach and proclaim His Word to His people. Throughout the Old Testament and New Testament, we see evidence of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs that contain the Word of God to help people read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest the truth of our Lord’s salvific plan. The first Christians continued to incorporate hymns and songs in their worship and daily life. Martin Luther and the reformers of the sixteenth century used hymnody as a vehicle to proclaim Christ and catechize the people to see that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ Jesus alone. Using a variety of methods set forth herein, this project set out to help people see true nature of Lutheran hymnody and how it can be used as a resource for daily Oratio, Meditatio, and Tentatio. These methods did indeed foster a change in people’s attitudes toward Lutheran hymnody and helped them see that the hymns – as an extension of God’s Word – can be an important part of their daily life in Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"_version_":1791135269391433728,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:23.628Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-12-12T18:03:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:48:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"48427bb4-d837-4cce-8b90-b0cbdfbba52f","accessControl_ssim":["5687b008-ebc1-4e7c-b0bf-e2be4958efe2"],"depositor_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"title_tesim":["Swimming Against the Stream: Re-dedicating to Parochial School Education in a Post-Christian Context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-12-12T18:03:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:14:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["33163ba0-18d8-4301-82c8-257fe5e75d47"],"hasLease_ssim":["7c4b4358-08c7-4d90-aa51-e3f270f67a4b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles Gieschen"],"committee_member_tesim":["Arthur Just Jr.","Peter Scaer"],"year_tesim":["2019"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The key question is whether the congregation understands the purpose of the parochial school in the same way that those who started the school understood their purpose in doing so. Institutions, including parochial schools, have a tendency to take their raison d'être for granted and begin to exist for the sake of perpetuating themselves as institutions. To re-dedicate to parochial school ministry in a worthwhile way that serves the true mission for which it was founded, a congregation must evaluate its own assumptions about, goals for, and perceptions of the school ministry. This project provides a template for honestly evaluating the pros and cons of continuing to operate a parochial school in difficult circumstances and honestly comparing the stated, original purposes for the school with the actual purposes for the school in the minds of the congregation members. It offers an example of one way to take a congregation through this self-examination process and in this case, how to help the congregation re-dedicate itself to parochial school ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Walking through this interim time can also be colored by stress, grief, and frustration. Intentional interim ministry (IIM) provides a congregation with a trained and experienced guide to help a congregation discern God’s leading and prepare well for their next pastor. Communicating the need for and benefits of IIM to Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC) associated congregations provides targeted options for congregations addressing an upcoming pastoral vacancy.LCMC’s congregational polity and mutual accountability calls association staff and pastors to provide resources, support, and best practices for congregations entering a time of pastoral transition. An introductory presentation and facilitator training were created, taught, and evaluated with the goal of equipped intentional interim pastors to facilitate the presentation for LCMC as requested. The facilitator training and an example of the introductory presentation were evaluated using two questionnaires. To further refine these tools, LCMC leaders with experience working with congregations in pastoral transition were invited to participate in a semi-structured interviewed. The initial training, evaluations, and interviews identified strengths in the introductory presentation where common questions were addressed, clarifying the need for and benefits of IIM, and reminding congregations that transition is a natural part of life in the church. Unaddressed questions were also identified. While the facilitator training was useful, the erroneous assumption that a brief training session for facilitators would be sufficient preparation to meet any congregations, including conflicted and anxious congregations, was identified. Overall, training pastors to facilitation an introductory presentation was successful, and a refined version of these tools could be utilized within LCMC to communicate the need for and benefits of IIM to congregations entering a time of pastoral transition."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717247945539584,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:15:16.158Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"94531b56-1dc1-4157-8821-514b61d26586","accessControl_ssim":["ff80d96d-9747-41d7-ac44-d525515f21f2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Staffing to fulfill the Great Commission : paraprofessionals in the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:28:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bfc39863-c615-4b73-a251-c430bba2844c"],"hasLease_ssim":["89f0650e-e9c4-4ca0-8a95-257a015783be"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. This study presupposes a working knowledge of church growth principles. The manual has five chapters, an appendix and a bibliography.Chapter One introduces the term paraprofessional and describes the climate in the church creating the need for this new type of church staffing.Chapter Two further establishes the need for discipleship and growth today. The business model of staffing and management principles adds credibility to paraprofessionals. Growth is documented through this multi-level staffing model by a partial survey of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod congregations already using such staff.Chapter Three builds a biblical and confessional base for the paraprofessional model by identifying the call of every Christian in baptism, the special call of the professional church worker, and the special call of the paraprofessional and volunteer staff.Chapter Four outlines the way paraprofessionals have evolved at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Kentwood, Michigan. Basic guidelines are developed from this experience and the information gleaned from other churches using the paraprofessional modelChapter Five concludes the manual with a look to the future about the use of paraprofessionals in the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135615525322752,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:53.727Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":77,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
