Noting the contemporary social phenomenon of people being able to articulate a rather well-defined religious faith while having no involvement in a congregation, the author surveyed current and historical literature regarding popular religion, denominational boundaries, the faith expression of Americans, and Lutheran theology. Programs, liturgical formulations or teaching cannot replace that role that each Christian has to hear another's burden and to assure him of God's grace. This paper reviews the theology of forgiveness and especially the role of the human mediator of forgiveness. A contrast is made between current systems of counseling and Christian forgiveness. The major areas of concern for Lutherans are: Fox's semi-Pelagianism, his rejection of the traditional understanding of original sin, and the Christology of Creation Spirituality.  These differences cannot be reconciled, but by approaching Creation Spirituality as an aspect of sanctification, much of its teaching can be incorporated into a Lutheran theology.  The result of this integration is a Lutheran Creation Spirituality.
