Bioethical literature from 1980 to 1988 was reviewed. There is a bioethical role for pastors complementing the function of healthcare providers.  Implications for pastors applying six ethical principles and nine underlying ethical foundations reveal they will benefit by making use of them. However, in the formation of a new hospital ethics committee, I observed no established role for pastors. Seven religious experiences examined by theologian John MacQuarrie are presented in bioethical situations. The author sought to use the theological criteria of experience, reason, scripture and tradition by studying Wingeier's 'Working Out Your Own Beliefs'.  He taught how Douglas Wingeier, John Macquarrie and Donald Bloesch applied these same criteria to their theological studies. The different criteria that each theologian stressed was discussed with an adult class as they learned to accept or reject each criteria and to follow their own theological guideline in faith translation. A theoretical basis derived from Erickson's theory of ego development and the spiritual theologies of Nouwen and Macquarrie were used to critique and design a program for junior high students.  Breakaway, a program of prayer and meditation (by Mark Link) was adapted and implemented with a group of sixty-one junior highs over a period of twenty-eight weeks. The program was evaluated by questionnaires and interviews with students and professional educators.  Although the students did not increase their frequency of prayer, their understanding was broadened, they were using a greater variety of prayer forms, and showed a willingness to pray with other people.
