An analysis of contemporary marriage notes the reformation that has taken place in theology and marital practice. She presents herself as in desperate need of affirmation.  The woman feels that she is not in control of her life and is a failure in both her profession and her marriage.  The author uses object relations mode of therapy to treat the woman.  He integrates this approach with theological aspects which are suggested by Paul Tillich's writings.  The client's husband joins her in therapy.  This addition contributes to the building of a satisfying marital relationship. It permits individual creativity informed by individual ministry styles.  Methodology involved library research and six years interaction with transcultural couples. The central hypothesis of the project is that pastoral openness to anger and disillusionment are crucial to the reestablishment of contact.  The project employs three home visits and nine group sessions to investigate the depth of marital conversation, marital dynamics, developmental histories, ethical issues of family life and faith issues arising from pastoral involvement. The research notes increased capacity to communicate and to reflect on ethical issues. It uses family systems and object relations theory to support the research.  The project does not provide a comprehensive premarital counseling program but does present a model developed within an Episcopalian context.  The practical research is done by questionnaire-based interviews with twelve couples who experience the genogram as the primary framework for their four to six session premarital programs. early marriage; and 3) uses married lay couples as role models for those preparing for
