There were twelve couples in attendance, four already married between 6 months and thirty years and eight unmarried couples. The couples already married enjoyed sharing and caught some of the enthusiasm from the couples preparing for marriage, while the unmarried couples enjoyed the mix as well. The author believes that the marriage rite best expresses the theology of marriage in the Orthodox Church, and makes a very good 'text book' for marriage preparation. During the retreat, we began with an introduction offering an Orthodox vision of marriage, followed by a line by line study of the rite. Communication skills were also taught, using the theology expressed in the rite. The project was designed to: encourage both partners to see decision-making on the basis of competency and shared agreement rather than on gender; see the financial management of the family as a shared responsibility; and build the couple's communication skills in order to enhance an equal companionship relationship. Based on the understanding that both male and female share equal dignity and value before God, the project was conducted with the presupposition that Nigerian Christian husbands can break through tradition to live happily as equal companions with their wives.  To accomplish the project objective, ten selected Nigerian marriage partners participated as an 'experimental group' in a marriage enrichment program. Clergy use it even when they have misgivings. They do this because the unity candle is becoming an effective symbol of marital unity. Although the marriage ceremony has developed over the centuries in an effort to express a needed theological message for marriage, it by no means is complete or final. The marriage ceremony contains many practices that were originally secular in nature and subsequently sacralized. The unity candle is another such practice undergoing this same sacralization process. Laity-influenced popular religion has supported this process over the last thirty years.
