The design of the investigation consisted of three phases: in the first phase, the two independent variables selected for this study were examined.  These variables were 'levels of communication' and 'communication competence', and were examined with a sample of thirty married couples.  The second phase consisted of the development of the Ministerial Support Program. The third phase was evaluative and proposed measuring the impact of the program through the accomplishments in marital communication that were obtained by the participating couples. Using analogies drawn from the Genesis narrative about Jacob's life, the theoretical approach for this study evolved from cultural anthropology, filtered through family systems and object-relations principles. The purpose is to reveal underlying structural changes that are fueling the UM debate. The scope is confined to interview material gathered from six United Methodist clergypersons. The course is designed to promote mutually satisfying relationships among the couples and thus foster marriage strengths and personal growth by means of lectures, group learning activities, and weekly home assignments.  The curriculum is designed to concentrate on five areas:  the Lordship of Christ, Intimacy, Communication, Responsibility, and Planning. Each week a subject is studied and practiced in these five areas.  During the seminar, half of the time is used to review the lesson learned from the previous week and half of the time is to study the new topic.  All the principles of the study are drawn from the Bible.  The project adopted a quasi-experimental approach to determine the success of the treatment. The design first established two selected groups, subject group and control group, each consisting of sixteen couples.  The subject group received the ten-week seminars and the control group remained untreated.  Pre-tests, post-tests and delayed tests two months after the seminar were employed to evaluate the treatment.  The test includes the Spanier Dyadic Adjustment (DAS) to measure the general quality of marriage and the Marriage Relationship Evaluation Survey (MRES) to measure the specific five areas covered in the seminars.  The findings of this study demonstrate that there was significant, positive change in marriage quality immediately after the ten-week marriage enrichment seminars.  The change endured for at least two months after the treatment. Clergy use it even when they have misgivings. They do this because the unity candle is becoming an effective symbol of marital unity. Although the marriage ceremony has developed over the centuries in an effort to express a needed theological message for marriage, it by no means is complete or final. The marriage ceremony contains many practices that were originally secular in nature and subsequently sacralized. The unity candle is another such practice undergoing this same sacralization process. Laity-influenced popular religion has supported this process over the last thirty years.
