This has not enhanced communal endeavors.  The author suggests that each category alone is insufficient.  Both approaches are needed to further the ideal of a naturally balanced life, personally and communally.  Grounding contemplation/action in a process that is dynamically and fundamentally part of the human condition, the author offers insights into activist, Dorothy Day, and monastic, Thomas Merton. In two workshops with a total of 26 persons, the project assigns participants to read Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton, or Surprised by Joy by C S Lewis. Each participant must read all of one of the works and parts of the other two. As they work through these texts participants compose a spiritual autobiography, outlining it at the beginning and completing it for presentation at the end of the workshop. Writing a spiritual autobiography becomes an excellent way for these Christians to understand their pilgrimages. This study describes how the researcher presented Merton's understanding about the Cross to a group of adults who were struggling with issues related to their journey through mid-life.  Two procedures were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention: a qualitative approach involved the use of free-story interviews, anecdotes, and comments by the participants; and, a quantitative approach was utilized which involved the Spiritual Well-Being Scale. The spiritual well-being inventory did not indicate any statistically significant changes for the group in any of its measures of religion, existential or spiritual well-being.  However, the data gathered by more qualitative approaches indicated that this intervention can have an impact upon the lives of adult lay people.
