The researcher approached this research project believing that certain metaphors would be more comforting to his members than others. Therefore, the researcher sought to discover which eternal life metaphors were more comforting through the use of a research survey. He then held research group interviews to learn why these metaphors were more comforting than others. It describes a dialogue between two poles-the congregational context and scripture-and the emergence of symbolic language for preaching.  The thesis is based on Paul Ricoeur's linguistic theory of distanciation: standing before the text, the congregation and preacher can find new meaning.  The methodology encourages imagination in preaching and a genuine dialogue between the congregation and scripture.  It also illustrates Don S.
