After covering the foundations of the development and organization of cognitive, emotional and linguistic meaning systems for the individual, the author reinterprets psychodynamic concepts as metaphors which can be used in therapy to help the client describe his or her internal mechanisms and process. The use of metaphors to elicit change in meaning systems is portrayed, particularly in terms of developing a sense of self-love in the client. The final two chapters portray ways in which myths as process metaphors can be used to bring about therapeutic change, and then a framework in which Christian pastoral psychotherapists might be able to embrace what is vital about Christianity without sacrificing what is vital about being alive."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133739433066496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:04.546Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:06:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:59:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a582e91c-cd10-4617-9782-68c9d1280bb1","accessControl_ssim":["bae1e9f3-97e5-45f2-8d17-a02717bc267c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The art in preaching: the sermon as an art form in the Reformed, Free-Church tradition"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:06:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:56:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7cfe97d5-7386-4724-b1a3-d886973d7d50"],"hasLease_ssim":["eccec6fe-889d-4330-a163-c07790e4eabd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"advisor_tesim":["H Wilson Yates"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gary B Reierson"],"keyword_tesim":["Tests and measurements in religion"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"subject_tesim":["Narration","Symbolism","Preaching--Study and teaching","Metaphor"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis is that the sermon is an art form and that is is appropriate to think of it in this way from the point of view of the Reformed, Free-Church tradition. His assertions were affected by his long life, by special people in his life, and by a rebellious stance he assumed toward the established church. He offers a number of illustrated case metaphors regarding the practicality of such a methodology."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716272084090880,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:59:45.505Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:34:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:44:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e5e1a5ad-9ada-4630-855e-3b9ad90806f1","accessControl_ssim":["0579998e-0e40-4b45-acb2-d5fbf024d843"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The use of metaphor in pastoral psychotherapy: a qualitative study of five pastoral counselors"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:34:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:42:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e7efafd6-7f4c-4333-8f1d-5097c6133f61"],"hasLease_ssim":["8a42d702-99de-48bb-a825-bea60a3b821b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lallene J Rector"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David J Ohrt"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Metaphor","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study involved a structured interview of five pastoral counselors in the Chicago area to discover how metaphor was used in their practice of pastoral counseling. The study was of exploratory and descriptive nature. The data was compared and important themes noted. The results of the interview were viewed through the lenses of Object Relations Development Psychology, Metaphorical Theology as developed by Sallie McFague, and the work in linguistics of Lakoff and Johnson. The study found that paying attention to client metaphors enhanced empathy, helped to ground the client, facilitated creativity, cultivated depth, and aided in the transformation of world-view and view of God."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fc8e637d-6b92-421f-936e-4844dc981265"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135033464979456,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:44:38.631Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":16,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
