After demonstrating the importance and value of metaphors, it presents the father metaphor as a valuable addition to current metaphorical language in use. Due to widespread difficulties with pastoral identity and cultural confusion about the role of biological fathers, this thesis sets forth a rediscovery of the term 'father' which can be applied to pastoral ministry in the twenty-first century. By conducting research in the areas of historical theology, biblical theology, psychology and leadership studies combined with semi-structured interviews, the following work proposes that the use of the father metaphor in pastoral ministry is a valuable addition to current pastoral metaphors already in use."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129800694300672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:21:28.272Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:21:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:04:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"83583c78-111e-4726-9cb2-f5b72d33260c","accessControl_ssim":["6bd59b24-9684-4c41-b5d3-e33f5760ff8c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Biblical metaphor in worshiping communities"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:21:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:00:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f64ecf35-444e-4d41-a5c4-a2820944fec6"],"hasLease_ssim":["b87f1d9c-f302-4e77-9876-6815857c8e54"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anna Carter Florence"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Justin James Lind-Ayres"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Witness bearing (Christianity)","Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (Woodstock, Ga)","Public worship--Lutheran Church","Metaphor"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["When employed in the liturgical and communal life of worshiping communities, biblical metaphors become vital tools in communicating the promises of God thereby shaping congregational identity. It describes a dialogue between two poles-the congregational context and scripture-and the emergence of symbolic language for preaching. The thesis is based on Paul Ricoeur's linguistic theory of distanciation: standing before the text, the congregation and preacher can find new meaning. The methodology encourages imagination in preaching and a genuine dialogue between the congregation and scripture. It also illustrates Don S. To be successful, preachers need to consider what makes for effective and helpful example stories, because stories can be a window to the core idea of a sermon. However, many preachers have difficulty finding good example stories when they prepare sermons. This project examines selected passages in Paul's writings from a homiletic perspective. Paul's metaphors and analogies have some recommendable elements and provide standards for selecting example stories. Paul's marriage and potter analogies in Romans and the planting and running metaphors in 1 Corinthians are excellent examples for contemporary preachers to follow. Two Korean pastors who are very famous for their impressive and influential sermons also have distinctive example stories within their sermons. There are some commonalities and differences among them. This project examines the value of Paul's metaphors and analogies and compares them with the two Korean preachers selected in order to develop some guidelines Korean preachers can follow in selecting example stories."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131797805858816,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:53:12.866Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:09:08Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:17:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"16a75987-4d8f-48a8-a432-9dbfcac19d91","accessControl_ssim":["f6682f94-bd45-43f0-acfa-9296253ae0dc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Att √•terer√∂vra vardagslivets helighet: om att spegla och p√•verka vardagen med metaforisk narrativ predikan"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:09:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:47:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dd9f5554-68e9-41cc-9f31-e0483d436ce9"],"hasLease_ssim":["e2c1e28e-8449-4288-b113-125a4cf4904e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Göran Lindström"],"keyword_tesim":["Everyday life"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Narration (Rhetoric)","Holy, The","Preaching","Metaphor"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Translated title: Recapturing everyday's holiness: on reflelcting and influencing the weekday with metaphorical, narrative preaching"],"abstract_tesim":["Postmodernity emphasizes the microcosmic, the local, ordinary life. The project offers a framework for understanding ministry through use of metaphor. Beginning with the premise that language creates and shapes worldviews and that metaphor in particular is a powerful means of expression, the project explores various works pertaining to metaphor and then moves to analysis of metaphors that have been operative in the life of one local church. These metaphors not only provide a foundation for a common language and common understanding of the congregation, but they also provide a strong means for shifting away from metaphors of constriction and creating new metaphors. The project proposes that a congregation's life may be transformed through shifting of metaphors and introduction of new metaphors."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873193017475072,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:51:41.422Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:48:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:15:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9cc6ea20-691e-422b-9e36-b27027e1ce36","accessControl_ssim":["ef4cf915-bd57-4141-9d3a-1cea98f68e3f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Images that move us: the power of metaphor in spiritual transformation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:48:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:43:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f8df6790-3b02-44dd-81d9-6fd84519cf1b"],"hasLease_ssim":["d2cdf649-1bec-40ec-977d-4b8bcaf592ea"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert J Schreiter"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Alfred David Pooler"],"publisher_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"subject_tesim":["Loder, James Edwin, 1931-2001","Hernandez, James","Sobrino, Jon","Spiritual formation","Metaphor","Change--Religious aspects","Ricoeur, Paul, 1913-2005"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project examines the power of metaphor, asking whether metaphor has a role to play in spiritual transformation (as in conversion and growth). A model of spiritual transformation is developed from the work of Loder, Sobrino, and others. Following a praxis-theory-praxis approach, it begins with a selection of metaphors taken from source material in the author's religious congregation, the Passionists. The project subjects these metaphors to careful scrutiny with the aid of symbolic anthropology (following the work of James Hernandez) and hermeneutic philosophy (following the work of Paul Ricoeur). It concludes that metaphor and spiritual transformation are related in a variety of ways, and it offers some pastoral suggestions for use of metaphors in ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129436810117120,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:15:41.245Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":16,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
