In this effort a small group from Fairhaven meets six times with a group from an African American congregation to identify racial eight concerns in pastoral care: evangelism, substance abuse and addiction, discipleship, psychological needs, youth at risk, parenting, prisoners, and racial tension. The two congregations organize a parish ministry council to plan more effective common ministry. The project motivates and trains members of First United Methodist Church (Hemingway, S Car) to become volunteer tutors with children in Hemingway Primary School for six weeks in 1996. Needs become apparent and resistant attitudes change. Volunteers become so involved in rewards of one-on-one ministry that they put aside racial issues.
