It enumerates the distinctive features of United Methodist churches which may help or hinder growth.  The project then examines growth potential of a specific congregation.  It suggests a model for a five year growth plan and a process for implementing these recommendations. In the second Quadrennium it received greater support from the Church.  Within the Southern New England Conference a strategy was put into place in 1983.  This project focuses on that strategy and raises questions about its relevance. To determine the impact of the strategy, visits are made to ethnic centers, a structured interview is held with Bishop George Bashore and questionnaires are sent to district superintendents, pastors and lay persons. Research into the biblical, historical, and theological roots of the sacrament led to the development of a theological framework which featured the primary aspects of remembrance, proclamation, participation, and thanksgiving.  This research also contributed to the planning of a study series, sermon series, and worship series which involved the congregation of First United Methodist Church, Moweaqua, Illinois, in a consideration of the sacrament's place in their faith experience.  Involvement in the project by this congregation led to a broader understanding of the sacrament, an enhanced experience of it, and a willingness to commune more frequently. The main objectives of this project are to develop and lead a workshop which will enable church members to participate in the evangelistic ministry of the local church. Little support was found to relate receptivity to religious beliefs, motivation, or involvement, except for attendance patterns and for respondents who have women pastors. Effects of racism and sexism education differ significantly.
