Spirituality is here defined as one's personal relationship to God. Jesus makes this very clear in his teachings in the New Testament. In chapters 5, 6, and 7 in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shows how to live a personal spiritual life that affects the individual and the world. Christian leaders focus too often on programs and statements at the general level while trying to improve the ministry of the church, but goal setting and programs alone do not improve ministry if they do not reach individuals and set their hearts afire for the ministry they are called to do. The early church in the book of Acts attests to the importance of one's spirituality (Acts 2:42). The early church fathers and church reformers were deeply aware that if spirituality is to be found within the church it needs first to be found in the hearts of individuals who are responsible for ministry (Wesley, 'Wesley's Use' 63). Wesley particularly emphasized the importance of spirituality in the life of lay ministers. United Methodist ministry today and leadership of the local church are based on laity and clergy cooperation. United Methodist annual conferences and districts provide continuing education for clergy. One of the most important goals for district superintendents is to take care of the spiritual formation training for their pastors. Little spiritual training, however, is offered for local lay leaders, especially for those serving in small membership churches. This dissertation defends the view that spiritual formation instruction for lay leaders, based on a Wesleyan model, makes a difference. The Bible, prayer, Holy Communion, Christian conferencing, and fasting are still basics for personal spirituality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134140750364672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:27.271Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:35:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a1d4edba-cf4d-45b8-9d8e-614c4a245522","accessControl_ssim":["80fd7a9b-5752-4eef-b1fd-94bee6c0c6ca"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A trinitarian ontological approach to the congregational revitalization of Loudsville United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:51:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["76ce86c5-5794-4462-a43e-367ab9eff1a9"],"hasLease_ssim":["8ad45d20-efa6-484c-9c2a-ad88395709eb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles E Gutenson"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Eugene Heckman"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Trinity","United Methodist Church--Membership","Loudsville United Methodist Church","Church renewal--Methodist Church","Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to present an ontological approach to the congregational revitalization of Loudsville UMC, modeled after the Divine Archetype of the communio of the Trinity. My intention was to identify and understand difficulties, tensions, and probably ways for working with the gifts and ministries paradigm of the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134015774785536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:28:28.086Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:47:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:33:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"13be335a-097d-4e0a-9819-3d50a001cb95","accessControl_ssim":["a799cb9e-5c3e-4eb0-8148-3d25e8ff4822"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Strategies of churches planting of Chinese Methodist Church in Australia"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:47:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:42:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["25e02c74-576b-47fa-b200-042308b954fe"],"hasLease_ssim":["136ad92f-05c1-4504-9036-b3493de184fa"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Logos Evangelical Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Wilfred Su"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Australia"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James Chang-Hua Ha"],"publisher_tesim":["Logos Evangelical Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Chinese","Methodist Church","Church development, New"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis is the writer's sixteen years of serving experiences at the Australia Chinese Methodist Church. Bremem First United Methodist Church was recently severely conflicted, but is resolving its conflict and growing. The challenge ahead is to internalize and institutionalize new forms of relating to each other and become fully a church that makes decisions in a collegial style. The interventions designed to bring this ideal, came to life from a model emphasizing adaptation and shared learning. A four-month sermon series and an accompanying Bible study emphasized the power of remembering. Other interventions include a revival using former pastors who remembered the church's spiritual journey during their pastorates. A naming of the new building designed to claim the best of the church's past and to repent of it's failings. A number of crises during these interventions gave leaders opportunities to practice new skills in open and respectful conversation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128515271196672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:01:02.397Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:33:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:59:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5e1f0a42-75bc-4b29-a5bb-fa991ece81cd","accessControl_ssim":["b58079be-db21-4d43-b83f-f86cb16b4b47"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Soul strength as a therapeutic model informer addressing internal oppression in African American males in an urban environment"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:33:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:53:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7b6d1a12-ecf4-4dbe-a4ca-9dd132f4daeb"],"hasLease_ssim":["cfd8ccac-800a-4d85-8f6f-f1e1c278d063"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Samuel E Mann"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Cecelia L Harris"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Race relations","Methodist Church","Church work with youth","Self-esteem","African American youth","St Matthew United Methodist Church (Chicago, Ill)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study investigated the use of Soul Strength to combat internal oppression caused by racism in the development of a ministry model called GROUP.
