Each group should be unique in method and format. This work refutes the concept that there exists any one 'right group' that is capable of ministering to all people and to every type of need. The author finds the basis for his thesis in the biblical record. He determines that small group ministry would be more effective if it used the principles and methods of modern schools of therapy. John Wesley's theology and methodology that concern the class meeting and the society guide this project. The author updates this method to coincide with the needs of a twentieth century society. The paper includes a description of a 'Groups With Purpose' project in one local church and a design for establishing and maintaining such a ministry in a body of believers. The paper concludes with a discussion of unresolved questions. It conjectures that 'Groups With Purpose' could be a viable ministry in a church of any size if the philosophy is carefully understood and applied."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134003912245248,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:28:16.773Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:41:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:44:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b0951175-4de8-4b24-8e52-9c26cad5e8a0","accessControl_ssim":["6937c60a-db95-4402-bfc8-69b964bd2773"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The development of a contemporary model of outreach and nurture based on the Wesley class meeting and for use in a new congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:41:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:13:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b0309e6a-5bd5-4c17-978c-aeed06040ba0"],"hasLease_ssim":["d0f6ae09-1351-4c1d-97fb-30d97378f5ed"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Candler School of Theology"],"year_tesim":["1988"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Stuart C Greene"],"keyword_tesim":["Relation (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["Candler School of Theology of Emory University"],"subject_tesim":["Church--History of doctrines","Wesley, John, 1703-1791","Theology","Conversion","Methodist class meetings","Church development, New","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project designed and tested a contemporary adaptation of the Wesley class meeting which the author called a Journey in Discipleship. Each person agreed to 1) attend the weekly class meetings; 2) practice daily scriptural meditation and prayer; and 3) take a God-experience survey before and after the sessions."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Candler School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["1e360310-aec8-4e88-a19a-00b4db71ef4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134961495965696,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:43:29.996Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:39:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4687ae22-8782-46fa-9249-6592a0372840","accessControl_ssim":["f83d001b-f273-4ae1-9f9d-07923847c88b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Wesleyan class meeting: its history and adaptability for the twentieth-century church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:11:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3be58be7-e0b5-440d-8310-4f81c7893d2f"],"hasLease_ssim":["47159394-c6a1-4e50-894c-7bdc0c0cac4d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Clarence Curtis Goen"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Members of the congregation were involved in disciplined study and living for an eleven week period. The conclusions were: 1) The small group model was ineffective for church renewal but very effective in pastoral care; 2) The image of the pastor as chief teacher was reinforced; 3) The local church can allocate only a portion of its time and energy to small groups without seriously neglecting other important ministries; and 4) The local church needs more help in understanding the dynamics of human relationships."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127132485713920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:39:03.670Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":6,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
