There are about 9 million Mexican-Americans and 2 million Puerto Ricans in the US. Both Hispanic groups are at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder, and face discrimination, unemployment, poor housing and low educational achievement. Puerto Ricans on the mainland appear to have a higher incidence of mental illness than Mexican-Americans. Mexican-Americans tend to be more acculturated and live in less stressful conditions than Puerto Ricans. There is a high rate of underutilization of mental health services by Hispanics. The shortage of Hispanic-American priests is an obstacle to strong Hispanic leadership in the Roman Catholic Church. Protestant Hispanics are mostly evangelical in theology and conservative in life-style with little involvement in socio-political action. There are almost no pastoral psychology programs to train Hispanic leaders in pastoral counseling and chaplaincy. The church must work toward better socio-economic conditions for Hispanics and develop programs to train Hispanic leadership."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133435154137088,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:19:14.363Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:10:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:17:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bf94393e-e00c-48c3-a89a-52faa10de373","accessControl_ssim":["afb86570-b2f4-4165-86f5-ef928b99eaf7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An outsider listens: a critical conversation about pastoral leadership with a Mexicano Catholic faith community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:10:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:38:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bfd5f6a2-eae3-496f-89c1-554b674352d4"],"hasLease_ssim":["b1abd3e5-d8cd-4e56-81f6-a8dd422338cd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert J Schreiter"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Borlik, Dan Paul"],"publisher_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Mexican Americans"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis-project, an exercise in practical theology using the Whiteheads' method, reflects on emerging pastoral leadership in a cross-cultural setting. Favoring the insiders' perspective, it explores needs assessment and participant observation as tools for initial (outsider) pastoral listening in a Mexicano Catholic immigrant faith community in southern Colorado. Through a critical review of leadership research and a word study, it relates stakeholder findings to Joseph Rost's relational concept of leadership, as well as to Ronald Heifetz's leadership task of promoting adaptive change. This initial conversation with outsider church officials and insider lay members identifies competencies for promoting cross-cultural collaborative pastoral leadership and proposes practical steps to stakeholders for an improved ministerial praxis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic
