To be known requires respect and understanding of their communities’ pastoral needs and religious practices. Sadly, many leaders have a colonial mentality that foments stereotypes and even prejudice toward Hispanics. The only way to move beyond this mentality is to sincerely enter into relationships with Latino(a)s, and understand how they see themselves. This respectful understanding must begin with our Church leaders. Latino/as want to share their cultural and religious practices that connect them to their families and ancestors. Although the Hispanic Catholics play a vital role in the life of the Church, barriers to inclusion remain. Hispanic Catholics want to fully participate in the Church’s mission to serve the whole community. They are eager to share their gifts through collaborative service in their parishes.\r\n\r\nIn this thesis project I reveal Hispanic communities that are already present but not often seen. I introduce their religious practices to the larger community including church leaders. I focus on the religious practice called Adoración Nocturna Mexicana (Mexican Nocturnal Adoration). A practice where members of the Mexican Catholic communities spend the night in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar where, like all Catholics, they worship the true presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated hosts reposited in the Tabernacle and exposed in the monstrance on the altar during nocturnal adoration vigil. The study shows how Hispanics have historically and are presently practicing nocturnal adoration as part of their popular religious practices. More importantly, I explore what drives them toward these religious practices. By listening to their stories, I have heard their heartfelt voices as they express their needs and desires, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. I also demonstrate how they emulate the Samaritan woman at the well (John: 4-42), and like her are moved to evangelization when they also come to the realization of being known and therefore loved by Christ. \r\n\r\nI delve into the pastoral, social, and theological dimensions of Hispanic popular Catholicism and devotional practices, referred to as Santo praxis and lo cotidiano (the everyday). \r\n\r\nThe goal is to demonstrate how popular religious devotion is forged in the historical struggles of people who are oppressed. I describe in detail the rituals promoted by Adoración Nocturna Mexicana. \r\n\r\nAnd finally, share a theological reflection of the study’s findings and a pastoral response related to the importance of intercultural competence for effective leadership and accompaniment of Hispanic communities.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["rmendez@student.ctu.edu"],"_version_":1854424409589153792,"timestamp":"2026-01-15T22:42:11.142Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8b45b031-266c-4874-aa97-019c5d27b59a","accessControl_ssim":["3a13e4d7-aecb-43b4-9fa3-9c56e165ff73"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Ministry with the frail elderly"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a0becd4b-801a-4c35-9016-e3499c6891f7"],"hasLease_ssim":["4da51c6b-a7f5-4675-a416-d401ac365470"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The Ministry with the Frail Elderly (FEM) Study reflects concerns that are both prophetic and priestly. The study prophesies that the problems of ministry with the frail elderly are systemic in nature and that the magnitude of the problems will continue to grow. Relevant literature and demographics are used to convey the particulars of the problem. Secondly, this study suggests strategies and models for congregations to use to identify, nurture, and assist frail elderly…The purpose of the FEM study design is to describe the circumstances of ministry with the frail elderly by demographic statistics, by medical and health literature, and by interviews with pastors, health care staff, and the frail elderly themselves. Geographic limits are established for interviews to York County, Pennsylvania, the location of this researcher’s parish. The goal of Part I is to describe the complexity of the needs of the frail elderly; and secondly, to suggest strategies for a shared ministry. Is it possible to live creatively within this tension? This is the question this project explores. The first chapter looks at this tension as it is experienced in a particular church by one pastor. Hopefully the reader will be able to identify with this experience in his or her own ministry setting. Next the project looks at three contemporary models of social ministry in a pastoral context. Chapter two offers the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Rev. Dr. Paul Sherry, President of the United Church of Christ, and Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker, as these models. The third chapter offers a theological foundation to support ministry that balances the pastoral and social. Juergen Moltman is the primary reference for this theological exploration. The final chapter includes a variety of ways the creative tension of social and pastoral ministry can be lived out in the local church. The project concludes that social ministry can creatively stimulate pastoral ministry. Effective pastoral ministry creates new possibilities for social responsibility."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860281352781824,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:27.899Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4cb35c29-b8ef-44d5-b9e2-b63dfa7054b5","accessControl_ssim":["da2bb732-a1d0-4067-be7b-28b008b604fc"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Church growth and decline: a case study of the variable factors effecting membership ingression and egression of four churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4b28e756-c6f9-4248-b891-d46271817d22"],"hasLease_ssim":["4968f9a3-9537-4a03-b620-17755775a593"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A committee of four or five people who are concerned about the mission of the church and who have a deep commitment and an enthusiastic spirit would make the survey, evaluate and act upon the results, and monitor future membership dynamics. In acting upon the results, the committee would evaluate the existing programs in light of their effectiveness and meaning for the membership. If the leadership of a local church follows the suggestions in this report, several important changes may be expected to be the result. First, the research (the actual inquiry, data collection, and analysis) will help a church to discover the reasons why people are joining and/or leaving the church; to identify attracting and repelling factors and activities of the church, areas of specific needs of the people the church is trying to reach and strategies of the church in responding to those needs, the population objective of the church’s outreach, and factors influential in attracting and retaining future members; and to provide some candid data for making policy decisions. Second, policy decisions informed by the research will help to change congregational activities, emphasis, programs, pastoral priorities and activities, the direction and objective of the church’s outreach, and will help to promote attitudinal changes. And, finally, the problem is that some churches will continue to decline no matter what is done. In those cases, almost all that can be promised is that leadership will understand the root causes of the decline."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860257300545536,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:04.961Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6c01c4a4-0dc1-4a6d-9cf1-d318e01a0df8","accessControl_ssim":["e31d63c4-f344-4172-bb12-786657d6aaa4"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Realistic cablevision options for a local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["32bff6d7-cf62-4367-820a-95bd6a71979c"],"hasLease_ssim":["588f59d3-49dc-4113-b1c2-b907e871e740"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Beginning in January of 1976 and continuing through December of 1978, this experimental ministry took place with the inactive members of the congregation of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Annville, Pennsylvania. During this three-year period the pastoral ministry in the parish was carried out in the normal manner. This project became an integral part of the parish work and was seldom mentioned, in order to avoid affecting the results. The members of the parish were aware that I was involved in a doctoral project, but very few had any knowledge of the area being studied. Further, the project did not alter the remainder of the parish program in any significant manner, with the exception of the fact that a number of the inactive members responded in some measurable way. The project is, therefore, a plan which can be readily adapted and utilized by any parish in which inactive members are a concern. My intention in this project was to explore the problem of that conflict in the parish which is related to inactive members by demonstrating that a ministry at the point of conflict or resistance would be helpful to the inactive persons involved and the parish itself, with the result that the learnings from this ministry would provide practical guidelines for pastors and churches to minister with inactive members."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860248248188928,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.328Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c168f704-4020-4359-b884-5ebd887adbf8","accessControl_ssim":["20990cc2-1909-4121-b248-29b14b42826e"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The development and formative evaluation of a consultative process to describe the expressed needs of single adults and appropriate models of ministries within local Baptist churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3c36c41f-21af-4fb1-bb65-2799863ca8dc"],"hasLease_ssim":["a5e9e6f7-6b4f-4fb0-bd99-8edc55c49efd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Although this project began independently from the above emphasis, it is hoped that the process may be a beneficial tool to those local congregations that wish to respond to these denominational emphases."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860247953539072,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.047Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"073018bc-c217-4582-b13c-0f894d3ccbee","accessControl_ssim":["f6844c0f-76f5-4cdd-b200-807fd3eae849"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Intensive Journal: a new tool for ministry. The objectives of this report are the following: to describe the Intensive Journal method and evaluate it from the viewpoint of the Christian faith and ministry; to describe and evaluate its practical life of the pastor and as a tool for ministry in the local church; and to make observations, recommendations, and suggestions for future use of the Intensive Journal by pastors."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860240728850432,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:49.157Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b05efc2a-1e54-4f18-a90d-710645d5e577","accessControl_ssim":["147ac4a6-81ed-4257-a76a-810de9096432"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral care of the adult cardiac pre-operative patient: a case study"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6555b6e1-35e1-450b-bf4a-9f1a85001769"],"hasLease_ssim":["3b33579a-c4f7-46ff-b308-1ba55a643779"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A case study covering a period of eight months provides the data for the exploration. The time span was January through August 1978. Within that time the patient, who is also a parishioner of mine, refused to undergo cardiac catheterization on one occasion and three times refused to undergo open-heart surgery which involved a mitral valve implant and three bypass grafts. As we shall see, the patient exhibited a high degree of anxiety and employed various tactics in his efforts to cope with his anxiety. We shall also be privy to the pressures to which he was subjected and the pressures which he exerted upon his family, the medical staff, and his friends, including me. A somewhat unique dimension of the project is based in part on the fact that, at the patient’s request and with the permission of the chief surgeon, I was present during the surgical procedure. If pastoral care is to have any significance for the parishioner, then surely the pastor must use every authentic means available to support and sustain the parishioner."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860240995188736,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:49.411Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9bdcf7ac-c5a8-4f12-9bb7-cf9ac7c9bbd4","accessControl_ssim":["251d3b3a-d65d-4ab0-8a52-5bf45c3dbcdc"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Planned pastoral home visitation: a survey of present practices with recommended strategies"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["695bf79d-145e-4170-b11f-66de89294b52"],"hasLease_ssim":["62367d18-9c21-4972-bb24-3cfa3bc4ed42"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1977"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The information from these questionnaires was then coded and processed through the data processing facilities of Penn State University and the University of Michigan under the supervision of Dr. Loyde Hartley of Lancaster Theological Seminary. The information gleaned from this effort has become the basis for Chapter Two, which is a discussion of where pastors are today in regards to the practice of home visitations, to endeavor to note the effects of that practice on congregational life and finally to bring together any helpful strategies they presently are using in this regard. In doing the latter, the project placed these present-day pastors in the midst of the ongoing forensic, which has been taking place in relation to the practice of home visitations over the last seventy or more years, which is the subject for discussion in Chapter One. That chapter endeavors to show that there is (and it may be that there has always been) a continuing significant undercurrent and resurgence of increased interest in this matter with the profession in recent years. Finally, Chapter Three attempts to set forth an overall strategy for home visitations, using my own approach as a kind of structure, enlarging upon and firming that design with the insights of prominent practical theologians who have written on the subject throughout the same seventy or more years mentioned above, as well as the data discussed in Chapter Two. Finally, the research recommends certain directions for continued study. It may be helpful for me to acknowledge that this project, as it has been carried out, has been pursued primarily in terms of visitation as a function of the professional pastor."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860232747089920,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:41.545Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
