A qualitative phenomenological research design was employed. The author utilized an interview protocol based on identified stressors cited in previous research. Seven major stressors were noted by participants with safety concerns, absence of field-specific training, and cross-cultural conflict being the most prominent. Three categories of stressors emerged: individual stress, cross-cultural stress, and professional stress. It uses a mixed method design that incorporated both descriptive and quantitative data analyses in an effort to determine the impact of: 1) family of origin and past life experiences, 2) missionary life stress, and 3) the practice of different disciplines on the lives of missionary men serving in cross-cultural contexts overseas. Overseas male missionaries from five North American evangelical mission agencies (617 men) were asked to participate in an anonymous web-based survey with 226 men completing the survey. Prevalent themes and factors impacting male missionary sexual purity emerged in the study. Study results point to the importance of past life experiences, the impact of cross-cultural life stresses, and the employment of specific disciplines. These factors affect a man's pursuit of sexual purity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720678432178176,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:09:47.726Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:28:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:33:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"70ba5120-4ab2-47db-87ff-f9fe50527a24","accessControl_ssim":["556941a5-7e50-487e-89df-b61615334631"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Common stressors and coping resources for single missionaries of the International Mission Board"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:28:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:26:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8c7fa557-c254-4336-994a-b7becf43ceb3"],"hasLease_ssim":["d1a5fb69-93bd-4aba-8313-4dbf97008bdf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard J Higgins"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Eric C Bothur"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions of Columbia International University"],"subject_tesim":["Southern Baptist Convention--International Mission Board","Stress (Psychology)","Adjustment (Psychology)","Missionaries--Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation explores how single International Mission Board missionaries respond to stressors on the field, and how their organization and home church help them manage stress. The purpose of this project was to discover factors that contribute to the resiliency and retention of missionaries who have gone through traumatic events in their missionary career in Africa and yet continue to serve there. This qualitative study used narrative methodology and involved 35 interviews with missionaries who had experienced various traumas. Four factors that respondents brought into their trauma event were: a strong personal conviction, a preparedness from birth, words from God, and sturdy relationships. Four factors which emerged from the trauma were experiencing the keeper side of God, hearing authoritative leadership voices, quickly finding new ministry foci, and benefiting from functional networks.
