Matthew"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The dissertation seeks to answer two questions: 1) Was doctrine or the mission of making disciples the driving force behind the Great Commission Resurgence movement in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) that began in 2007 and culminated in the passing of the final report from the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force in 2010? (2) Was the driving force behind the Great Commission resurgence biblical and effective in reversing the stagnation and decline in the baptismal number of the SBC? In researching this, no major works were found that focused on this topic of doctrine versus mission as the motivating factor of the Great Commission Resurgence. In forming a research strategy, four areas were examined. First was the need to exegete the Great Commission from Matthew 28:16-20. The Greek text was studied for linguistic syntax and structure. Additionally, Bible dictionaries and commentaries were referenced. Second, it was necessary to look at recent history dealing with ecumenical movements and their effects. Third, the Great Commission Resurgence itself was investigated beginning with Daniel Akins's 'Answering the Call to a Great Commission Resurgence' at the 2007 Building Bridges Conference and culminating with the report form the taskforce at the SBC in 2010. The project was implemented with fourteen current and future leaders of Calvary Baptist Church. The project director did biblical research on the missional commands of Christ and general research on the missional mindset. Lesson plans were formulated and project participants were led through seven equipping sessions. Evaluation of participants' progress toward the missional mindset goal was measured with a pretest and posttest assessment instrument and a report time held eight days after the equipping session during an evening worship service at Calvary Baptist Church. A sound biblical exposition of Luke 4:18 by the researcher reveals the poor primarily as the spiritual poor, but does not exclude economic conditions. Based on the analysis of data through mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative research), the researcher proposed modifying and updating the traditional Japanese seminary curriculum for pastoral ministry. A modified curriculum requires first that seminaries nurture leaders who can lead their churches toward the eschatological vision in Revelation 7:9 as the goal of ministry.
